Artemis Accord: 22 April 2024

Sweden becomes the 38th country to join the Artemis Accords.

About Artemis Accord:

    • 2020: Drafted by NASA and the U.S. Department of State.
    • It is a framework for cooperation in the civil exploration and peaceful use of the Moon, Mars, and other astronomical objects.
    • It is a non-binding bilateral agreement. 
  • Founding members:  Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • India has also joined the Artemis Accord in the year 2023.
  • It is built upon the foundation established by the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. 
  • It is a multilateral agreement under the United Nations and  serves as the foundation for international space law.
  • It emphasizes the peaceful use of space.
