Why in the News?
Recently, several new cases of African Swine Fever have been reported from Kerala.About African Swine Fever:
- It affects pigs and is a highly contagious viral disease.
- ASF is a different disease from swine flu.
- There is no impact on human health and the virus does not affect people.
- It was first detected in Africa in the 1920s.
Symptoms:
- Diarrhoea (sometimes bloody)
- Vomiting
- Reddening or darkening of the skin, particularly ears and snout
- Laboured breathing and coughing
Transmission:
- Direct contact with infected pigs, faeces or body fluids
- Pigs eating infected pig meat or meat products
- Biological vectors – ticks of the species Ornithodoros.
Treatment:
- Animals are culled to stop the spread of infection because there is no approved vaccine.
