  • It was instituted by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1948) to assist displaced persons from Pakistan.
    • In current times it is used to tackle natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, etc.
  • Disbursements are made with the approval of the Prime Minister.
  • PMNRF gets an exemption under Income Tax Act.
  • It accepts only voluntary contributions by individuals and institutions and does not get any budgetary support.
  • It is audited by an independent auditor outside the Government.
