The End of an Era: Netaji Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Patriarch, Dies at 82

Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, passed away on 10th October 2022 at 82. He founded the Samajwadi Party & was a serving leader for decades. He also worked in the Union Government as the Minister of Defence and had been elected 10 times as MLA(Member of the Legislative Assembly & 7 times as Lok Sabha MP.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on 22nd November 1939 & served 3 times as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was the son of Murti Devi and Sughar Yadav. Born in Saifai village in Uttar Pradesh, he had 3 degrees in political science, namely, B.A., B.T., and M.A. His son, Akhilesh Yadav, served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. 

His health had recently deteriorated significantly and had been dealing with serious health concerns for several years. His son, Akhilesh Yadav, confirmed his death & soon after, the internet began to mourn. Every political member has started remembering his unmatched contribution to the community, people, country & politics. Leading his life as a key soldier, his death is now an irreplaceable loss. 

The unparalleled founder was admitted to Medanta Hospital at Gurugram, Haryana, due to multiple organ failures. He took his last breath just 6 weeks short of his birthday. He was the most prominent member of politics & according to Manmohan Singh, “he was a highly esteemed leader with the utmost respect for everybody.” 

He represented the constituency of Mainpuri in Lok Sabha & a Member of Parliament in the Azamgarh & Sambhal constituencies. He was often called ‘Netaji’ by his colleagues, leaders & workers. Yadav was the first chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Before founding the Samajwadi party, he worked with V.P Singh’s national government, Janata Dal, and INC. 

During his service as 10 times MLA & 7 times an M.P., he led positions for Jaswantnagar, Tilhar, Nidhauli, Manipuri, Kannuaj, Bharthana, Azamgarh, Gunnaur, Shikohabad, and Sambhal. He worked through parties of S.P. (Samajwadi Party), SSP(Samyukta Socialist Party), BKD(Bharatiya Kranti Dal), Lok Dal, Janata Dal, and Janata party.

In 2019, during the 16th Lok Sabha session, Mulayam Singh Yadav wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become a Prime Minister again & hoped that Narendra Modi would re-return with his force & attitude to take everyone forward. He astonished everyone with his words of gratitude, which went viral on the internet.

After his demise, many leaders & people have shown grief for him & how his journey has been nurturing to many others in society. Moreover, to respect his service, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared a 3-day state mourning & has also assured to give him full state honour for his final rituals. 

Mulayam’s last rites would be held at Saifiai, his ancestral home in Uttar Pradesh. When he was shifted to ICU, Prime Minister Modi checked upon Akhilesh for well-being. But little did anyone know the day would arrive so soon. However, in the mid-period, Mulayam showed good signs of recovery, sighing in relief.

Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Achievements

  • He was MP of Lok Sabha five times between 1996 and 1998, 2004, 2009, 2014, then 2019.
  • He was also a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly (1985, 1974, and 1967).
  • In 1992, he created the Samajwadi Party.
    Ram Manohar Lohia was Mulayam Singh Yadav’s mentor in many respects. Lohia was instrumental in developing the seasoned leader.
  • Netaji was the CM of Uttar Pradesh from 1989 – 1991, 1993 – 1995, and from 2003 – 2007.
  • He was also Minister of Defence in the Indian government from 1996 to 1998.
  • In the Lok Sabha, he represented the Mainpuri seat.
