Mathura-Vrindavan Carbon Neutral Target 2041

Net Zero Carbon Emission

Why in the News?

Mathura-Vrindavan aims to become a “net zero carbon emission” tourist destination by 2041.

Key Points:

How the plan of  “net zero carbon emission” will be achieved?

  • Small circuits called ‘Parikrama Paths’ will be built which the pilgrim can use either on foot or using electric vehicles.
  • Tourist vehicles will be banned from the entire Braj region, which includes famous pilgrim centres such as Vrindavan and Krishna Janmabhoomi.
  • All 252 water bodies and 24 forests in the area will be revived.

What is net zero?

  • Net-zero, which refers to carbon neutrality, means a balance between the amount of earth-warming greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions produced and the amount eliminated from the atmosphere to tackle climate change.
  • It will ensure that global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial age levels.

Way to achieve Net Zero Target:

  •  Planting trees or restoring forests.
  • Use of nature-friendly technology to store and capture carbon emitted from burning oil and coal.
