IBDC has accumulated over 200 billion bases from 2, 08, 055 submissions from more than 50 research labs across India.

Why in the News?

Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology unveiled India’s first national repository for life science data ‘Indian Biological Data Center’ (IBDC) at Faridabad, Haryana.

Key Point:

About Indian Biological Data Center’ (IBDC):

  • It is the first national data repository for life science data in India where the data can be submitted from across India and can be accessed by researchers across the country.
  • Located at: Regional Centre of Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad-Haryana with a data ‘Disaster Recovery’ site at National Informatics Centre(NIC), Bhubaneshwar.
  • Mandate: To store all life science data generated from publicly-funded research in India.
  • Capacity: The digitised data will be stored on a four-petabyte supercomputer called ‘Brahm’. 
    • A petabyte equals 10,00,000 gigabytes (gb).

Benefits: 

  • It will reduce the dependency on American and European data banks.
  • Provide a platform for researchers to securely store their data within the country.
  • Provide access to a large database of indigenous sequences for analyses.
