Why in the News?

Recently, a suspension bridge collapsed over the river Machchu killing hundreds of people in Gujarat’s Morbi district.

  • It is a more than a century-old bridge and has long been a major tourist attraction.

  • The town of Morbi is situated on the Machchhu River, 35 km from the sea and 60 km from Rajkot.
  • Machchhu is a small river that rises in the Madla Hills and flows 130 km into the Rann of Kutch.

How suspension bridges work?

  • A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders.
  • It depends on the balance of the forces of compression and tension.
  • All of this balancing has to happen within the permissible weight restrictions for the bridge.
