The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program was initiated in 1992. It offers technical and economic support to community-based programs and civil organisations to create and enforce some actions to solve the issues of the global environment and helps in enhancing the lifestyle of local society, and helps them to eradicate poverty. It is a corporate program of the Global Environment Facility. This program collaborates and complements other programs of the Global Environment Facility and also supports more than 130 countries in the world. They work to cultivate environmental benefits, sustainable lifestyles, and social empowerment. This program provides funding to various community and social organisations and works for the welfare of women, disabled and indigenous people, and youths.

History of Global Environment Facility, Small Grant Program

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was established in October 1991 as a pilot program with the World Bank to aid for environmental protection and promotion, to encourage sustainable development of developing countries. In 1992 GEF was reconstructed and established by three partners ; the United Nations Development Program, the United Nation Environment Program, and the World Bank, at the Rio Earth Summit.

Work of Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programs

Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programs provide funds to various projects related to environmental issues such as climate change, land degradation, biodiversity, international waters, mercury, food security, organic pollutants, forest management, and many others. 

They grant around four million rupees, and the average fund is around two million rupees for various projects. This grant fund helps hundreds of communities and organisations.

Small Grant programs receive assistance and great support from government, societies, stakeholders, communities and other organisations.

It strengthens the social and economic aspects of the community.

SGP deals with all global issues related to the environment and empowers civil communities, local organisations, women, and other people.

Structure of GEF

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program Is an arranged governing board of organisations consisting of; agencies, a secretariat, an Evaluation Office and a scientific and technical advisory panel(SATP).

The GEF(global environment facility) organisation comprises 184 member countries. Every three to four years, meetings are arranged to assess and review the operational reports of the councils and examine the membership, authorisation and agreements to ensure the reconstruction of policies based on suggestions from member nations.GEF unites conferences, expositions and visiting GEF sites. For sustainable development and various international intents, numerous specialists like; eminent ecologists, environmentalists, top executives, scientists, and NGO leaders discuss significant issues. 

The GEF Council is the central governing board of GEF. It comprises 32 nominated associates from member nations; 14 are from developed nations, 16 are from developing nations & 2 associates from economies in transition. 

The GEF Secretariat reports directly to the GEF Assembly and Council. Currently, it is situated in Washington. C. They ensure that their decisions will ring out effective actions. 

The Global Environment Facility, Small Grants Program, consists of a technical and scientific advisory panel that offers scientific and technical advice to GEF on various policies, programs, and start strategies projects. This technical and scientific advisory panel comprises six members; who are specialised in the domain of GEF and internationally acknowledged experts. Institutions and experts of the Global area network support them, interconnecting with appropriate technical bodies and scientists, subordinates mainly in the area of environmental conventions. 

The GEF Independent Evolution Office (GEF IFO): Council nominates a Director to evaluate the reports and work independently. The Director controls and coordinates a technical evolution team, which works in the domain of evolution with GEF Agencies and Secretariat, applying the best courses & specialisation for independent evolution of reports.

GEF Agencies are functioning units of GEF. They perform their function in the disciplines of project management with the assistance of; government agencies, stakeholders and civil community organisations for the growth, planning and implementation of global environment facilities.
