Gayaji Dam: India’s longest rubber dam on the Falgu River

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, has opened the Gayaji Dam, the country’s longest rubber dam, on the Falgu River in Gaya. An approximate Rs 324 crore was spent on the development of the dam. The project featured experts from IIT (Roorkee). There will always be enough groundwater in the barrier for pilgrims’ comfort. Due to its development, devotees who come to the Falgu River at Vishnupad Ghat to perform Pind Daan will now have access to a minimum of 2 feet of water all year round.

Key takeaways

  • On the suggestion of specialists from IIT Roorkee, the Rubina Company of Austria built the Gayaji Dam in partnership with Nagarjuna Building Company of Hyderabad.
  • In addition to the rubber dam, the Falgu River’s banks have been improved, and a steel crossing has been constructed so pilgrims can visit Sita Kund.
  • Rubber that is 17 mm thick makes up the rubber dam. Its width is 400 metres, and its elevation is 3 metres. The dam’s total water capacity will be roughly 2.5 km after completion.
  • Bar Dam has been maintained at a 3 m height. It can retain three metres of water. If more water is present, it will flow from the top of the rubber dam downward or toward the north. Plans have been developed to release water from the rubber dam under specific conditions.
  • It is resistant to bullets and, as stated by specialists, won’t decay for 100 years. This rubber dam, constructed for around 312 crores, would store water in the Falgu river all year.
  • This will make it easier for individuals to bathe, do pind daan, and engage in tarpan. People travel here from around the world to make sacrifices for their ancestors’ deliverance.

The story of the 'Gayaji' rubber dam

On Sept 22, 2020, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar laid the rubber dam’s foundation stone. Its completion date was set for October 2023. However, Nitish Kumar instructed that it be completed by Sept 2022. Engineers laboured tirelessly all hours of the day and nighttime to make this a reality. It is known as the ‘Gayaji Dam.’ The Falgu river used to be clogged with filthy water and garbage. The length between Vishnupad Devghat and the Pindvedi on the east side has been shortened. Previously, one had to travel by private car through the bypass. Some monks used to walk across the river. A steel footbridge has now been constructed.

During the rainy season, water will gather in the dam

Gayaji is the name given to the rubber dam. It stands three metres tall. The water that reaches the stream during rainy days is stored in it. Water can be stored for up to three metres. If there is more precipitation than this, the water from either the top of the gasket will flow north or downstream. In addition, measures have been established to cause flooding from rubber dams under certain conditions. A rubber dam is similar to a balloon. It also includes an air removal system.

India's longest rubber dam, Gayaji Dam, is dedicated by the state of Bihar's Chief Minister

The most excellent rubber dam in the country, the “Gayaji Dam,” and a steel foot overbridge were formally opened by Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar for the convenience of pilgrims who travel to the area at the time of Pitripaksha Mela to pay reverence to his forebears.

I’m delighted the dam was constructed earlier than expected before the Pitripaksha Mela, which begins on Friday. Establishing and keeping Ganga flow in Gaya throughout the year will be the second significant challenge. He commended water management minister Sanjay Kumar Jha and his colleagues for completing the foundation’s project, the cornerstone laid on Sept 22, 2020, despite Covid setbacks. “Ganga water has touched Rajgir and is scheduled to reach Gaya even by the end of the calendar year,” he said.

The Falgu River’s rubber dam, which spans a vast swath of marshes, will increase tourism and impact the environment.

Water will accumulate in the dam throughout the rainy season

The rubber dam has been given the name Gayaji. It is three metres tall. The water that falls into the stream on rainy days is retained. Water is held for a distance of two to 3 metres. If there is more precipitation, the water will flow north or downstream from the top of the gasket.

Furthermore, procedures have been implemented to create flooding from latex dams under particular conditions. A rubber dam resembles a balloon. It also comes with an air extractor.

Why is a rubber dam in the Falgu River required?

Gaya is an important city in terms of religious tourism. Every year, thousands of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain tourists visit. Many of them are devotees who came for Pind Daan, bath, and tarpan to obtain salvation for their ancestors. Except during the rainy season, the flow of surface and groundwater in the Moksha Dayini Phalgu pond near the world-famous Vishnupad monument does not endure for the rest of the days. Plastic material was developed to address this problem. The Falgu River near Vishnupad temple will now be brimming with water all year. Worshippers no longer need to be worried.

The Palamu district of Jharkhand is where the Falgu River is born. This river, essential to Hindu and Buddhist faiths, flows through the renowned Bihar city of Gaya. The Falgu Stream in Bihar spans over 135 kilometres. This river rises close to Gaya at the meeting of the Lilajan and Mohana streams, eventually joining the Punpun River.
