The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only known celestial object with life. While there are huge amounts of water across the Solar System, only Earth has liquid surface water. The ocean covers over 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, dwarfing the polar ice, lakes, and rivers. Land, which includes continents and islands, makes up the remaining 29% of the Earth’s surface. Mountain ranges, volcanoes, and earthquakes are generated by the interaction of multiple slowly moving tectonic plates on Earth’s surface layer. The magnetic field that shapes Earth’s magnetosphere and deflects damaging solar winds is generated by the liquid outer core of the planet.

The colour of the Earth would be bright and bluish. Swirling white cloud patterns of midlatitude and tropical storms can be seen in latitudinal bands. Because of the ice, the Polar Regions would be white, the oceans dark blue-black, the deserts tawny brown, and the forests and rainforests bright green.

97.5 percent of the water on Earth is salt water, while 2.5 percent is fresh water. Only 0.3 percent of fresh water is in liquid form on the surface.
Earth’s Formation
Each planet was formed when material from equal distances from the Sun collided. Earth was formed from stuff found in its region of space. The Moon’s genesis is quite different from that of the Earth. Earth was formed similarly to the other planets. Different materials collided in this region of space. The material eventually formed a planet. Earth became hotter as a result of all of the impacts.
Earth’s Structure
Four concentric zones can be found on the earth. (Figure: 1)
- The inner core, which is assumed to be a solid, spherical mass of iron, is the deepest. It has a radius of 1,216 kilometres (730 miles)
- The next zone, known as the outer core, is thought to contain a 2,270-kilometer (1,362-mile) deep layer of molten liquid rich in nickel and iron
- The mantle, a solid yet putty-like rock that may actually flow, sits on top of the outer core. The thickness of the mantle is approximately 2,900 kilometres (1,740 miles)
- The crust, or outermost zone, is the earth’s hardened exterior, with a thickness ranging from 5 to 50 kilometres (330 miles)

Relationship between the earth and the sun
The Earth rotates on its axis of rotation once a year and once a day. This axis of rotation is 23.5 degrees off-kilter with its orbital plane around the Sun. Polaris, the North Star, is the centre of rotation.
The tilt of the Earth’s axis remains aligned with the North Star as it orbits the Sun.
Earth receives heat and light from the sun. Life on Earth cannot exist without the heat of the Sun. The temperature will plunge to – 270 degrees Celsius, and there will be no liquid water. Plants produce the majority of the food consumed by living organisms. Without the Sun, photosynthesis would be impossible. The Earth orbits the Sun in 365.242 days.
