Introduction:

In the field of Mathematics, a number tree, often known as a factor tree, plays an important role in calculations and organising numbers. Let us learn a bit about how they work and the different theorems used while constructing and working with number trees. Besides the field of Mathematics, it is also used in computer science to study and manipulate numbers for complex calculations. Read on to know what a number tree is and how it is useful in our calculations. 

What is a Number Tree?

In Mathematics and other related fields, a number tree is a manner of presenting the prime factors of a number in the form of a pyramid of numbers in the tree ecosystem. They are also known as factor trees since they give the prime factors of a base number. Here is an example of a number tree, where we factorise the number 232.

What is the Tree Method?

The tree method of factorising a number has several steps that must be followed for a clear and efficient solution.

  1. Write the given number (base value) at the top of the number tree and make two branches out of it.
  2. Fill in the branches with a largest pair of factors of the given numbers, such that the product of the branches is the base number. 
  3. Continue the first two steps till the factors cannot be broken down further and the final factors are prime.
  4. Finally write down the solution in a single line. The index form is often preferred.

Note that in the tree method, prime factors are written within circles, while composite numbers are written within squares.

While using the tree method, people often make some common errors. Make sure to keep these in mind while you are creating a number tree and working with the tree numbers.

  1. Make sure that the product of the branches is the root. Often, people end up creating a tree where the branches add up to the root or base value.
  2. Do not automatically assume that a number is prime. They can have large factors, or they may also be prime. However, in most cases, questions asking for a number tree do not have a prime base value.
  3. Incorrect simplifying of solutions may result in a wrong answer. So, keep in mind to factorise the base number and simplify the solution properly.

Following the correct steps and keeping in mind the precautions will help you make excellent flowcharts that can be used well to solve mathematical problems and design other models in many cases. Besides mathematics, it is also used in several applications in fields like computer science and statistics.

Use of a Number Tree

A number tree gives us the prime factors of a number in a simple schematic form. Besides prime factors, the intermediate nodes also give us other factors other factors of a number. Once a number is broken down, it can be used in a variety of calculations and for solving complex problems. Once broken down, even large and complex numbers seem simple and small. Hence, it is often used by scientists and researchers as well as students.

Some popular uses of a number tree are:

  • Finding the highest common factor or HCF of two or more numbers
  • Finding the lowest common multiple or LCM of two or more numbers
  • Finding the numerical property of numbers, like their square, cube or prime
  • Converting different quantities to their nearest whole numbers. Since a number tree does not use decimals, it reduces the complexity of many calculations where approximations do not matter
