Civil Engineering Courses

The civil engineering course is one of the oldest engineering disciplines, with thousands of students enrolling each year. To learn more about this course, please read on.

Civil Engineering Course: Introduction

For a long time, engineering has been one of the top career choices for science students out of all available options. There are numerous branches of engineering, including software engineering, biotechnology engineering, mechanical engineering, and many others.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most diverse engineering fields. It studies infrastructure planning, design, construction, maintenance, and supervision. These infrastructures are critical to citizens to facilitate modern living, such as schools, colleges, hospitals, and highways.

The importance of these infrastructures cannot be overstated with the advent of modernisation, making the civil engineering course one of the most sought-after courses around the globe. Thus, if the buildings and their construction fascinate you, the civil engineering course could be ideal.

Civil Engineering Course: Eligibility Criteria

If you want to work in the civil engineering field, you can pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from any reputable college. Following your undergraduate degree, you will have two options: continue your education and enrol in a master’s or postgraduate degree programme, or look for a job.

However, different eligibility criteria must be met for admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

  • Undergraduate Degree (B.Tech in Civil Engineering)

It is a four-year program divided into 8 semesters. Only the following candidates will be eligible:

  1. Academic qualification: The aspirant must have passed 10 2 or any equivalent examination from any recognised central or state board.
  2. The candidate must have had Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects.
  3. Entry criteria: One of the major criteria for taking admission in the B.tech course is that the candidate must have cleared any of the following entrance examinations: JEE Main, JEE Advanced, WBJEE, MHT CET or any other state-level entrance exam.
  • Postgraduate Degree (M.Tech or MS in Civil Engineering)

It is a two-year program and can only be opted for by the following candidates:

  1. Academic qualification: The student must have passed the required undergraduate degree with a minimum passing percentage to be admitted to this civil engineering course.
  2. Entry criteria: The candidate must have passed the required entrance exam: GATE or any other college-specific entrance exam. The entry criteria, however, differ from college to college.
  • Diploma Course

It is a three-year course and the students can get admission in the second year of the B.Tech course.

  1. Academic qualification: The candidate must have passed class 10th from any recognised central or state board with PCM as the main subject.
  2. Entry criteria: The entry of candidates is generally merit-based or through entrance exams, depending upon the requirements of the college.

Civil Engineering Course: Subjects

The curriculum of the postgraduate civil engineering course differs depending on the specialisation selected. There are numerous elective subjects available on the course. However, the following subjects are covered in the postgraduate course:

Year 1

  • Engineering Properties of Soils Foundation Engineering
  • Soil Dynamics and Machine Foundations
  • Rock Mechanics
  • Earth Dams and Slope Stability
  • Earth Pressure
  • Clay Mineralogy
  • Ground Improvement Engineering
  • Design of Foundation Systems
  • Soil-Structure Interaction
  • Environmental Impact Assessment

  • Geotechnical Exploration and Advanced Soil Testing
  • Neuro-Fuzzy Applications in Civil Engineering
  • Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Computer-Aided Design of Foundations
  • Flow-through Porous Media
  • Pavement Analysis and Design
  • Engineering Technology
  • Modelling and Simulation
  • Computational and Statistical Methods

Civil Engineering Course: Fees

The cost of civil engineering courses varies depending on the college you attend. Annual course fees in IITs range from  INR 75,000 to INR 2,50,000, while those in private colleges range from INR 1,50,000 to around INR 4,50,000 or more.

However, the situation is quite different abroad. If you want to pursue postgraduate studies in civil engineering in another country, the annual course fee ranges from INR 8,00,000 to INR 95,00,000.
