The official CDS 2023 notification will be issued by UPSC on 21st December 2022, and the examination will be conducted on 6th April 2023. Candidates can apply for the examination once the notification is uploaded on the commission’s website. They must carefully review the CDS Eligibility requirement before registering for the examination. UPSC conducts the CDS examinations for admission to the Indian Naval Academy, Indian Military Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy.
CDS Eligibility: Overview
Candidates must consider the following regarding CDS Eligibility
- The commission holds the right to reject/ cancel a candidate’s application if the mentioned eligibility criteria are not met.
- The candidate will be removed from service if selected and later found guilty of misinformation or other similar misconduct.
- The verification of eligibility requirements is done using the original documents. After clearing the document verification, the candidate will qualify for the interview round.
- In cases where the certificate of eligibility is mandatory, the candidate may be permitted to appear for the examination. Still, admission will be provided after the required certificate of eligibility is submitted.

CDS Eligibility: Nationality
Aspirants wishing to take the CDS 1 2023 examination must be –
- An Indian citizen, or
- A citizen of Bhutan, or
- A citizen of Nepal, or
- Tibetan refugee who settled in India (permanently) before or on 1st January 1962.
- An individual of Indian origin who migrated from Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire, Malawi, Zambia, Vietnam, and Ethiopia to settle down in India permanently.
The candidates belonging to categories b, c, d, and e possess an eligibility certificate issued by the Govt. of India and provide the same to the recruiting body. The eligibility Certificate will not be necessary for candidates who belong to the Gorkha clan of Nepal.
CDS Eligibility: Gender, Age, and Marital Status
For – IMA (Indian Military Academy)
Male candidates (Unmarried) – born after or on 2nd January 1997 and not after 1st January 2002
For – INA (Indian Naval Academy)
Male candidates (Unmarried) born after or on 2nd January 1997 and not after 1st January 2002
For – Air Force Academy
The candidate must be 20 – 24 years as on 1st January 2021 (born after or on 2nd January 1997 and not after 1st January 2001)
The upper age for candidates possessing a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is 26 years. The candidate should be born after or on 2nd January 1995 and not after 1st January 2001.
- Candidates should be unmarried if they are below 25 years
- Married candidates who are 25 years old or more can apply
- Married candidates will not be provided with married accommodation during the training. Also, they will not be allowed to live with their family outside the premises
- Getting married is not allowed during the period of training
For – Officers’ Training Academy (OTA)

- Issueless divorcees who have not been married again and possess the divorce documents

Note:
- Graduates with their first choice – Army/ Navy/ Air Force must submit the certificate of graduation or the provisional certificates during the SSB Interview
- Candidates pursuing the final year/ semester of the course must submit the passing certificate during the interview process. The issuing date of the certificate should be before the date specified by the commission
- Candidates debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding any type of commission in Defence Services are not eligible to apply for the CDS exam.
CDS Eligibility: Mental standards
The candidate must be mentally sound and physically fit according to the guidelines issued by the Commission. A major number of candidates who qualify for the test get rejected on medical levels. So, the candidates are advised to have their medical examination done before applying.

Important:
- For male candidates the minimum height required to qualify is 157.5 cm. (162.5 cm for AFA and 157 cm for INA)
- The minimum qualifying height for female candidates is 152 cm.
- For candidates belonging to Lakshadweep, the minimum height required to qualify can be decreased by 2 cm.
- For Gorkha candidates and individuals belonging to the North-Eastern hills region, Kumaon, and Garhwali, the minimum height required to qualify is 152 cm.
- The minimum height required (after all relaxations) for all the entries is 148 cm
The CDS Eligibility for physical and medical standards covers weight and height for various age groups, the hip-waist ratio, BMI, vision standards for the Naval officers, and others. So, the candidates are advised to go through the official notification carefully for clarification on different aspects of CDS Eligibility.

Lasik/ equivalent surgery
Candidates who have undergone kerato-refractive procedures are required to produce operative notes/certificates from the medical centre stating the type of surgery, date, and procedure. The candidates should also meet the below-given additional requirement to be considered physically fit:
- Should be over 20 years at the time of surgery
- Minimum 12 months post the surgery
- Axial length by IOL Master =< 26 mm
- Central corneal thickness =<450 µ
- Residual refraction of <= /- 1.0 D including cylinder.
- A healthy normal retina.
Spinal Conditions – AFA
Having a medical history of injury or disease of sacroiliac joints or spine that prevents a candidate from leading a normal life can be a cause for rejection when applying for the Air Force Academy. History of fracture of the spine or prolapsed intervertebral disc, also the surgical treatment for the above-mentioned conditions will declare the candidate unfit. The below-mentioned conditions if detected will result in disqualification of the candidate

Hearing Standards – AFA
- Speech test –
Reduction of > 600 cm in FW/CV is not allowed
- Audiometric Test –
Audiometric loss should not be < 20 dB, in frequencies between 250 and 8000 Hz.
- A radical or modified radical mastoidectomy will disqualify a candidate even if good hearing is preserved.
- Cases of chronic otitis externa accompanied by exostoses/unduly narrow meat
- Cases of cortical mastoidectomy in the past with an intact tympanic membrane, normal hearing, and no current evidence of the disease may be considered.
- Tympanoplasty Type I
Acceptable 12 weeks post surgery if the ear clearance test is normal.
The Below-mentioned middle ear conditions may entail rejection:
- Vestibular dysfunction
- Tympanoplasty Type – II
- Tympanic membrane scar
- Stapedectomy operation
- Otosclerosis
- Meniere’s disease
- Infection of middle ear
- Granulation/polyp in the external auditory canal
- Calcareous plaques when occupying < 1/3 of pars tensa.
- Bell’s palsy following an ear infection
- Attic, central, or marginal perforation.
Physical Condition
The candidates should have good physical condition. They should follow the below-mentioned routine:
- Running – 2 to 4 kilometers in 15 minutes
- Chin-ups – Minimum 8
- Push-ups – minimum 20
- Rope Climbing – 3 to 4 meters
- Sit-ups – Minimum 20

- A mouth-opening more than 30mm measured at the incisal edges
- All potentially cancerous conditions.
- Dislocation of TMJ
- Incipient pathological condition
- Jaw discrepancies between the lower and upper jaw which is hampering efficient speech/mastication.
- Submucosa fibrosis
- Symptomatic Temporo-Mandibular Joint having tenderness and clicking.
- Poor oral health
- Periodontal pockets
- Visible calculus
- Bleeding gums.
- More than 2 Loose teeth
- Cosmetic/post-traumatic maxillofacial surgery
It is considered unfit for a minimum 6 months from the date of the procedure
- If malocclusion is hampering the maintenance of good oral hygiene, general nutrition, and the performance of duties.
General Guidelines – Medical standards
To be considered medically fit, candidates must have perfect mental and physical health. They should be free from diseases and syndromes. The detailed guidelines are mentioned below:
- No abnormality of the liver and pancreas
- No active, latent, or congenital venereal disease.
- No arteriovenous malformations.
- No chronic disease of the lungs and chest including allergies or immunological conditions, musculoskeletal deformities of the chest, and connective tissue disorders
- No congenital or hereditary disease or disability.
- No deformity or disease of the musculoskeletal system and the joints.
- No disease of the digestive system.
- No disease or injury affecting the normal functioning of either mandibular joint.
- No disease, disability, or congenital anomaly or syndrome of cartilages and bones of the nose, nasal polyps, or disease of the uvula, nasopharynx, and accessory sinuses. There should be
- No disease, syndrome, or disability of any endocrine system and reticuloendothelial system.
- No disease, syndrome, or disability of the heart and blood vessels including genetic, congenital, hypertension, and conduction disorders.
- No disease, syndrome, or disability of the throat and palate tonsils.
- No diseases of the genito-urinary system (malformations, atrophy, and hypertrophy of any gland or organ)
- No evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis or previous history of this disease.
- No features of chronic tonsillitis.
- No hernia.
- No history or evidence of epilepsy, mental disease, enuresis, and incontinence of urine.
- No hyper/ hypopigmentation or any other disease of the skin.
- No malformation of the face and head including deformity, asymmetry, from fractures, and depression of the bones of the skull.
- No nasal deformity
- No scars which can impair functioning or cause disfigurement.
- No sinus/fistula issues.
- No swellings including cysts, tumours, and swollen lymph nodes
- The candidate should be free of any medical conditions which lead him/her to visit the medical facilities and usage of any aid or drugs.
- There should be no proof of imperfect development of any system, congenital deformities, malformation, diseases, and syndromes.

Since the examination is expected to be conducted in April 2023, you have ample time in hand to prepare for it. To score good marks in the exam, you must be acquainted with the syllabus and the exam pattern. Start studying systematically. Devote a certain time in the day to your preparation. The written exam is an MCQ test. Purchase the required books and go through them. Retain what you learn. Also, revise regularly. Prepare well and be confident. You will certainly succeed.
