Knock-out or Elimination Tournaments

In a knock-out tournament, the loser of each bracket is automatically eliminated from the competition. Some teams may be given a “bye,” while others may be handed “seeding” if the number of players or competing teams is not a multiple of two in such competitions.

Seeding

Seeding is the technique of scheduling outstanding teams so that stronger teams do not face each other right at the start of a tournament.

Bye

A bye is a benefit granted to a team that is determined, in most cases, by seeding or a random drawing of lots.

The procedure of giving byes

Giving byes is done in the following order:

1st bye – Bottom of the lower half

2nd bye — Upper half of the body

3rd bye is towards the top of the bottom half.

4th bye — The lower half of the upper body

If there are more than four byes, the procedure will continue.

A knock-out fixture is normally selected by lot, and if it is drawn only by lot without regard for the teams’ standards, strong teams may face each other in the early stages, allowing weaker teams to advance to the semifinals resulting in an unfair and dull tournament. Seeding is done to avoid this. Seeding is a method of identifying strong teams and placing them in the schedule so that they do not meet in the early rounds. If there is no significant difference in the quality of the seeded teams, they are dispersed in the fixture by lot.
