Conservation of Energy

Conservation of Energy is an action made to decrease energy consumption by any means. It is essential for saving our natural resources. Renewable energy is used for the conservation of energy.

Energy consumption is the amount of power utilised. Many social and economic factors are responsible for energy consumption. Population increase is rapid in less developed countries. Hence, the need for energy and power is increasing day by day. In 2020, the average U.S. resident consumed 893 kWh of energy per month. Conservation of Energy can be done by using power more efficiently. Renewable energy such as sunlight, wind and water should be used. Energy conservation measures are used everywhere to reduce consumption. This had a positive effect on the quality of the environment. ECMs are the best way to improve environmental conditions.

Renewable Energy for Conservation of Energy

Renewable energy is the energy that is collected from natural resources that are available in ample amounts. These resources are replenished naturally. Renewable energy resources include sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy is contradictory to fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are not renewable. They quickly get depleted, and these resources cannot be used more than once. Our world is dependent on these fossil fuels. Hence, renewable energy resources are a much better option. Most renewable resources are sustainable. Biomass is one exception. Renewable energy is also called clean energy. This energy comes from natural sources and processes.

The availability depends on the day, time, and season. These are important factors in the conservation of energy.

  • Hydroelectricity is the largest renewable energy source for electricity in the entire world and is generated through water. A fast-moving force of water converts the force into electricity. This is done by moving the blades of a generator in a circular way.
  • Windmills were first used for extracting wind energy. Turbines are the modern versions of it. They are large and wide machines that run due to the force of the wind. The force moves the turbine’s blades in a circular motion. An electric generator is attached to the turbine, and hence, electricity is produced.
  • Renewable resources are responsible for the conservation of water, lowering pollution and reducing emissions of CO2. If we can install solar panels across 20 percent of the Sahara Desert, it will change the global weather patterns.

Conservation of Energy by Countries

The European Union cut the yearly consumption of primary energy by 20 percent in 2020. The EU has a SAVE program, which is concentrated on saving a large amount of primary energy.

India’s governmental body, the Petroleum Conservation Research Association, helps in reducing energy consumption. Another body, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, promotes energy efficiency and conservation.

Japan has done a significant job in the conservation of energy after the 1973 oil crisis. Oil-based fuel is imported from other nations, hence, sustainable energy is developed in the domestic sector. The Energy Conservation Centre in Japan is responsible for major research in energy consumption, and promotes energy efficiency in Japan.

Tips for conservation of energy

  • Energy-efficient products must be used.
  • Replacement of electrical appliances with energy-efficient appliances.
  • Check the product’s energy label as endorsed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
  • Installing energy-efficient appliances at home.
  • The use of solar and wind energy should be done.
  • Using solar power for basic uses.
  • Using Energy conservation measures (ECMs) in all buildings.
