Human resources planning is a continuous process of systematic planning.

It helps to use the company’s most valuable asset, the quality of employees. It ensures the best fit between the company and employees’ jobs by avoiding any issues that may harm the productivity and profit of an organisation. It manages the manpower of a company by avoiding shortages and surpluses.

Human resources help plan and allow the company to plan and maintain a steady supply of skilled employees. Therefore, it is also referred to as workforce planning or manpower planning. It helps companies to plan and to meet their targets in the future.

Concept of Human Resource Planning or Manpower Planning

Human resource planning is the process that determines the future requirements of human resources and the organisation. It also takes care of the performance of human resources to serve the company’s objectives properly.

The HRP process helps the organisation identify the necessity and requirement of future human resources and supply appropriate professionals to appropriate work in an appropriate place. The management of human resources needs a proper analysis of the future and present demands of the company. To manage HR, it is essential to analyse the planning properly. HRP provides planning and proper evolution of requirements of the company to fulfil it with proper manpower planning.

The Human Resource Planning Process

A human resource planning process involves four steps.

Current HR supply

The current human resource availability in the organisation and its analysis are the most critical processes of HR planning. It includes a study analysis of the current human resource team’s strengths and weaknesses and management in terms of skills, competencies, talents, experience, qualification, ages, performance, grades, designation, benefits, and compensation. The HR consultants might arrange a meeting with the manager to understand the critical issues of HR management.

Future demands

Analysis of the future requirement of the HR management is also an essential process by HRP. All the known variables of human resources like layoffs, future vacancies, retirements, attrition, pre-set transfer, promotions, etc. are taken care of in the planning. Additionally, competitive factors, abrupt transfer, resignation, dismissals, etc. are also included in the analysis process.

Demand forecast

The third step is to match the demands of HR with the supply to fulfil the future demands of human resource management. It is required to understand the strategy of the company and objectives as well to provide long-running planning to fulfil the demand forecast. This will align the organisation’s goals with the planning.

Sourcing strategy and implication

After analysing the gaps in the HR supply, the planning of proper strategy to fulfil the gaps is essential to achieve. After this, the HR consultant of the firm develops a plan to meet the gaps according to the demand forecast presented by them. This may include employee communication programs, talent acquisition, outsourcing recruitment, and many more to train and coach the employees.

Therefore, adequately conducted human resource planning can help the organisation meet the firm’s goals and objectives.

Importance of Human Resource Planning

Assessing future needs:  HR planning provides a powerful analysis of the urgent demands and requirements of the team and the firm. For example, when a company discovers a labour shortage and surplus, this HR planning can improve the situation by analysing the forecast of issues.

Foundation to HRM function: HRP is the first step of HRM function, providing the foundation to the function.

Investment perspective: The management’s mindset can change anytime, and the HRP can provide a proper guideline to the management for any investment plan and strategies to develop the organisation’s growth through the employees.

Employee turnover: A proper human resource plan can improve and reduce employee turnovers by adequately analysing the requirements.

Government guidelines: Human resource planning involves different legal planning to support the company from legal perspectives. It can help manage government policies for different people and manage legal terms.

Talented manpower planning: Due to daily business environmental changes, jobs are changing, and the demands are also therefore changing.

Challenges of Human Resource Planning

  • Inaccuracy
  • Uncertainties
  • Lack of support
  • Number’s game
  • Time and expenses
  • Lack of support
  • Lack of purpose
  • Resistance of employees

Conclusion

Human resource planning allows a business to target and maintain the right talent to employ. HRP is essential to achieve the objectives of the firm or organisation successfully. It provides long-term elements of strategies to meet the company’s objectives. The involvement and dependency of organisations are increasing in the present days of business. The human resource plan provides proper manpower according to the demands of the jobs and company.
