Understand The Concept Of Management

The process of planning, organising, staffing, directing, coordinating, and controlling is referred to as management. This article will help to understand the concepts of management better.

Management is essential in all types of businesses, including those that manufacture computers or handlooms, trade in consumer goods, provide bar services, and non-profit organisations. Whatever the organisation’s aims or objectives are, they all have one thing in common: management and managers. The concept of management is a purposeful procedure that successful organisations use to attain their objectives. All managers undertake several interrelated functions that makeup management. In simple terms, management is the art of accomplishing goals through people. 

Concept of Management

Famous philosophers and thinkers have provided several definitions of management:

  • Management is creating an environment in which individuals work together in groups to achieve specific goals.
  • The concept of management is described by Robert L. Trewelly and M. Gene Newport as planning, organising, and regulating an organisation’s operations to create synchronisation of human and material resources necessary for the effective and efficient achievement of objectives.
  • “Management,” according to Kreitner, “is the act of effectively achieving organisational objectives by efficiently using limited resources in a changing environment by working with and through people.”
  • According to George R Terry, management entails planning, organising, acting, and controlling to determine and achieve goals through the utilisation of people and resources.
  • As a result, the nature of management can be described as a method of accomplishing tasks to achieve objectives effectively and efficiently. 

Process

The fundamental functions or operations that the management conducts to get things done may be described as the ‘process’ of management. Planning, organising, staffing, directing, and managing are some such functions.

Effectiveness

The end product is what determines effectiveness. It implies completing the task at hand. As a result, management effectiveness is concerned with performing the appropriate task, completing activities, and attaining objectives.

Efficient

Efficiency refers to completing a task correctly and at a low cost. Management is concerned with making the best use of input resources to reduce costs and increase revenues.

Management must achieve objectives (effectiveness) with the least number of resources available, i.e., as efficiently as feasible, while maintaining a balance between effectiveness and efficiency.

Characteristics of Management

The following are some of the fundamental aspects of management:

  • It is a goal-oriented process

An organisation has a set of fundamental aims that serve as the foundation for its existence. Management brings together the efforts of various personnel inside the organisation to achieve these objectives.

  • Management is all-pervasive

In addition to goal-oriented processes, all economic, social, or political organisations engage in the actions involved in managing a business.

  • Management is multidimensional

Management is a multi-dimensional activity with three main dimensions:

  • Management of work: 

Every organisation exists to carry out some task. This work is translated into goals to be attained by management, who then assigns the means to fulfil them.

  • Management of people: 

Also known as people, human resources are an organisation’s most valuable asset. There are two aspects to managing people:

  1.  It entails treating employees as unique persons with varying demands and behaviours.
  2. It also refers to working with people as a group.

Management’s job is to motivate employees to work toward the organisation’s goals by leveraging their strengths and ignoring their faults.

  • Management of operations:

It necessitates a manufacturing process that includes the flow of input materials and the technology for converting these materials into the required output for consumption.

  • Management is a continuous process

The management process consists of continuous, composite, but distinct functions (planning, organising, directing, staffing and controlling). All managers accomplish these responsibilities simultaneously, all of the time.

  • Management is a group activity 

An organisation is made up of various people who all have different needs. As needs and opportunities evolve, management should provide opportunities for all employees to grow and develop.

  • Management is a dynamic function

The essential nature of management is that it is a dynamic function that must adapt to changing circumstances. An organisation must modify itself according to the demanded circumstances to succeed.

  • Management is a supernatural force

Management is an ethereal force that cannot be seen but can be felt in how an organisation operates.

All managers undertake several interrelated functions that makeup management. In simple terms, management is the art of accomplishing goals through people. To achieve commercial objectives, companies and organisations require good management. Various layers of management strive to organise and coordinate a company’s business functions.
