What is Staffing?

While running an organisation or a business, staffing is crucial as it is the process of obtaining, hiring, and managing the best talents to meet everyday business tasks and achieve organisational goals.

In simple terms, staffing is an essential management function concerned with attracting the best resources in the organisation to accomplish the business’s goals. Without proper human resources or staffing, managing people and completing tasks will be a task; as a result, the business might witness a significant downfall.

The Staffing Process

The primary reason “staffing” is a significant aspect in every organisation is that it hires and retains the best talents to meet organisational goals. At an individual level, staffing multiples productivity leads to better profit generation whereas, at the organisational level, it helps achieve organisational goals faster and more effectively. The staffing process includes the below-mentioned steps. Let’s have a look-

  • Manpower Planning
  • Recruitment
  • Selection
  • Placement
  • Training
  • Development
  • Promotion
  • Transfer
  • Appraisal
  • Determination of Remuneration

Let’s discuss all of these in detail –

  • Manpower Planning

The first step is manpower planning, where the qualitative and quantitative measurement of the upcoming manpower required is done. It acts as a blueprint during the selection process.

  • Recruitment

The second step in the staffing process is the actual recruitment, where finding potential employees gets started. Later, they are persuaded to send in the applications for the available positions in the organisation. Every time the recruitment process is followed with utmost sincerity, it results in better output.

  • Selection

The third and most crucial step of the staffing process is selecting the candidate. During this step, the candidates are shortlisted and get eliminated if not suitable. The primary purpose of this step is to hire the right fit for the organisation that can contribute positively.

  • Placement

The fourth step is the placement, in which the employee is introduced to the workspace and his responsibilities. During this step, the selected employee will be given a short orientation on the company and his work areas.

  • Training

The fifth step of the staffing process is the training of the employee. Once the employee is placed, there are higher chances that they know nearly what to do. In this process, the employee will be provided with the necessary training to start the work.

  • Development

Development can be defined as the growth opportunities in the organisation. The organisation must provide a diverse range of development opportunities to the employee, else they may be frustrated.

  • Promotion

The next step is the promotion, where an employee is given a raise in salary. It boasts ample confidence and an urge to perform better.

  • Transfer

The next step of the staffing process is the transfer, which mainly deals with shifting an employee from one position to another without any monetary benefits.

  • Appraisal

An appraisal can be defined as checking the performances of subordinates. It helps to identify human behaviour towards other people and jobs.

  • Determination of Remuneration

The last step of the staffing process is the determination of remuneration, which is indeed a difficult function as no tools can determine the actual wages.

Importance of Staffing

As discussed earlier, staffing is one of the most crucial aspects of management. Without proper staffing, working in an organisation might not attract desired results. Below, we have listed the importance of staffing. Let’s have a look-

  • Finding proper resources – The process of staffing is mainly concerned with finding reliable resources for the organisation that can add value by effectively conducting everyday operations.
  • Facilitates control – In an organisation where the entire staff has gained immense knowledge or is well-trained in all aspects of the job, they will attract better results for the organisation.
  • Improved performance – The process of staffing greatly impacts the overall productivity as it is mainly concerned with choosing the right people at the right time.
  • Provides motivation – Various monetary or non-monetary benefits provided by the company to its people will boost a sense of belonging, leading to improved organisational performance.
  • Production cost reduction – Staffing deals with choosing the right candidate, which minimises the production cost and increases revenue.

Conclusion

Staffing is one of the essential functions of a business. The process is a crucial part as it is the process of obtaining, hiring, and managing the best talents for meeting everyday business tasks and achieving organisational goals. Also, it makes sure that all organisation’s activities are carried out as per strategies formed in the planning phase.
