Discuss on the job and off the job methods of training

Training methods are used to improve and upgrade an employee’s skill and knowledge to perform their job more efficiently within the organisation. The cost of training depends upon the nature of the job, the types, and amount of people in a business. The company can access or select a wide selection of training options for its employees, including on-the-job and off-the-job training. As previously stated, the Training Method is chosen based on the Training needs analysis and the Training Objectives.

Every company provides several training options to help employees develop their knowledge and skills. The HRM department or the training manager is usually in charge of determining the necessary skill needed to upgrade and arranging a suitable training programme for the personnel. Employees are the company’s most precious assets. Thus, it is necessary to provide them with proper training.

What are the different methods of training?

Based on the requirement of an individual employee, the training is classified into two categories: on-job training and off-job training. So, let’s discuss both the ways of training briefly:-

On-Job method training: On-the-Job Training is a strategy in which workers, or operative personnel, are given specific instructions on how to execute their tasks on the job. The different methods of online-job training are:-

Coaching: In this strategy, a superior, senior or experienced staff gives workers directions on doing a task. It is one-on-one training for employees to get answers to their questions through the superior’s instructions and examples.

Mentoring: This type of training is offered to people at the managerial level. It includes the senior or manager giving directions to the immediate subordinate on carrying out day-to-day tasks. It’s another one-to-one training style in which the manager mentors the subordinate, guiding him through challenging situations.

Work Rotation: During an employment rotation, an employee is frequently shifted to other related occupations to familiarise him with other job backgrounds. This method allows him to avoid boredom caused by doing the same tasks and also aids in developing relationships with other members of the organisation.

Job Instructional Training: A trainer creates a step-by-step training programme in which the worker is provided instructions on how to perform the job correctly. The trainee is first given an overview of the job, and the expected outcomes before the trainer demonstrate the abilities required for the position.

The Advantages of on-Job training

  • Simplified Learning
  • Cost-Efficiency

The disadvantage of on-job training

Off Job Training

Off-the-job training refers to an organisation’s development activity that takes place outside of the workplace. Employees can be trained using a variety of off-the-job training methods. In this method of training, employees may fully concentrate on learning because of no workload. The different methods of online-job training are:-

Special lectures: This is also known as classroom training, and it provides employees lectures about the job requirements and the abilities needed to complete the job. There is usually a classroom or a workshop where professionals or specialists from professional institutes impart entire job knowledge to the workforce. The major goal of this training is to educate employees about their job responsibilities and allow them to discuss any questions they may have after listening to the lectures.

Simulation: In this type of training, the trainee is expected to learn how to operate machines and equipment that are reasonably constructed to resemble those found on the actual work floor.

Role-playing: In the case of customer service, this form of training is critical. The trainees take on the roles of the characters and act out the scenarios. It’s also known as socio-drama or psycho-drama, and it involves employees acting as if they’re in a predicament and must handle it on their own without any help.

Management Games: In this strategy, trainees are separated into groups and then given a simulated marketplace or situations in which they must use their knowledge and solve problems promptly.

Case Studies: In this method, trainees are given a situation or a problem in the form of a case study and are expected to address it based on their training programme learning.
