Common Viral Diseases in Human

Let's look at the list of diseases by viruses in humans, their symptoms, prevention and how they can be treated.

Introduction

The disease is referred to as an abnormal condition that adversely affects the functioning of the human body. In context with humans, diseases usually are referred to with a condition causing immense pain, abnormalities, distress, social issues and sometimes death. A disease may develop when any virus enters the human body. There is a list of illnesses that viruses can cause.

Infectious/Viral Diseases

Infectious/viral diseases are spread through microorganisms like viruses. Numerous viruses initiate a variety of infections in the host organism. Some of the most common viral diseases in humans include:

  • Mumps
  • Infectious mononucleosis
  • Shingles
  • Coronavirus
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Ebola
  • Measles
  • Polio
  • Viral pneumonia
  • Viral meningitis
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Common cold
  • Influenza
  • Chickenpox
  • Herpes

Mode of Transmission  Of Viral Diseases

Common viral diseases intensify after viruses enter the body of an organism and begin to multiply rigorously. Common ways through which viral diseases spread are:

  • Breathing in airborne droplets which are contaminated with the virus
  • When a healthy person comes in contact with an unhealthy or ill person through water droplets, cough, handshakes, etc.
  • Through touching dirty street channels, laptop of an unknown person, using towels or injections of the ill person
  • Having sexual contact with a person ailing from a sexually transmitted disease
  • Insect bites or vector-borne germs
  • Eating dirty and junk food or drinking contaminated water

Symptoms

Viral diseases result in various symptoms that can vary depending on severity, age of the ailing person, and the virus causing infection. Some common symptoms of viral diseases include:

  • Flu-like symptoms, sore throat, headache, cough
  • Body aches
  • Irritability
  • Malaise
  • Rash
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy nose, nasal congestion
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen tonsils

In infants, the signs for a viral disease can include

  • Excessive sleeping
  • Difficulty in feeding
  • Bulging of the soft spot on the top of the head
  • Excessive crying or fussiness

However, viruses can cause some severe symptoms as well. They are

  • Change in alertness or level of consciousness
  • Chest Pain
  • High fever
  • Lethargies or unresponsiveness
  • Unexpected seizures
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Stiff neck
  • Yellowing of skin and white area of the eye

Prevention

  • Avoid contact with a person having the viral disease
  • Avoid unprotected sex
  • Eating clean food with a balanced diet for high immunity
  • Use a sterile injection needle to induce a drug in the body
  • Take vaccine (if available)

Treatment

Viral diseases are not treatable with handy antibiotics, which treat bacterial infections. However, the most common viral diseases in humans, like a common cold or flu, generally recede over time in healthy people. These diseases are acute and heal over a short period when the immune system starts attacking the foreign bodies.

However, viral diseases, like dehydration, pneumonia, etc., can lead to life-threatening situations. Moreover, certain sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS can even cause death.

Conclusion

Viral diseases can wreck down the body’s defenses and cause severe infections and life-threatening complications. They can spread through several ways, including breathing and physical contact. Common cold and Chickenpox are the most common viral diseases. However, some virus-caused diseases like HIV/AIDS can result in a person’s death.
