A rectangle is a type of polygon which has four sides and also has two dimensions which are called length and breadth. In the case of a rectangle, its perimeter is defined as an overall distance that is covered by the sides and the boundaries. In simpler terms for calculating the rectangle perimeter the basic step is to add all the four sides of the rectangle. And the reason for summing the four sides is that since a rectangle has only four sides, its perimeter would be the sum of the four given sides. A rectangle unit can be represented in sq. ft, inch, meter, mm (millimeters), cm (centimeter), feet, etc.
PROPERTIES OF RECTANGLE
- A rectangle is a form of a quadrilateral.
- Each inner angle is equal to 90 degrees since the opposite angles are parallel and equal.
- The total of all internal angles equals 360 degrees.
- Both diagonals are the same length and intersect each other.
- The perimeter of a rectangle having edge lengths a and the other as b is 2a+2b units.
- The area of a rectangle having side lengths a and b is given by ab sin 90° = ab sq units.
- A rectangle’s diagonal is its circumcircle’s size.
- If indeed the two angles intersect at 90 degrees, the rectangle is then called a square.
Formula _ rectangle’s perimeter
The perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of all its sides, which, in the case of a rectangle, has four faces. Every polygon’s perimeter is defined as the total distance traveled with the help of its edges. Because the other facets of the rectangle have equal length and breadth, the perimeter of the rectangle is twice the length plus two times the width of the rectangle.
The formula for perimeter of rectangle
Perimeter of rectangle= addition of four sides
= width + length + width + length
= 2xlength + 2xbreadth
The perimeter of rectangle formula is
2x (length + breadth)
= 2x (length +width)
REAL-LIFE APPLICATION
The importance of the perimeter of a rectangle in day-to-day work life and normal activity is high, it is very useful in many forms and makes a great effect if used in the right form. Among all the benefits, a few of them are given below:
- When a swimming pool is constructed, almost all of them are in rectangle form as it’s widely used. In that case, it becomes very easy to calculate the total length of the races that will be held in those swimming pools and it becomes easy because of the use of the perimeter of the rectangle.
- Doing artwork and craftwork is very hard and it requires many different types of measurement, so among different measurements, one of them is calculating the borders/sides of the figure which is rectangular for finding that the use of perimeter of rectangle formula can ease out the work.
- The perimeter can be used to determine the distance of the ceramic border to be built before building a residence.
SOLVED EXAMPLES
- Calculate the exact perimeter of a rectangle with a length and width of 13 cm and 16 cm, correspondingly.
Solution:
Given:
13 cm in length and 16 cm in width
We are aware,
A rectangle’s perimeter equals 2 (length + width).
Replacing the width and length values here,
P = 2 (13 + 16) cm
2 x 29 cm = P
As a result, the total perimeter of a rectangle equals 58 cm.
- A rectangular lawn has a length of 20 cm and a perimeter of 80 cm. Determine its breadth.
Simple answer:
Now there are two things given:
- lawn perimeter= 80 cm
- 20 cm is indeed the length of the lawn
So, Let W represent the needed width of the lawn.
And as we know from the formula,
P = 2(length + breadth) is the perimeter.
We obtain this by applying the formula;
2(20 + width) = 80
W + 20 = 40
W = 40 − 20 = 20
As a result, the lawn width is 20cm
