Preparation

Phosphorus trichloride is obtained by passing through dry chlorine overheated white phosphorus. the subsequent is that the reaction that occurs:

P4 + 6Cl2 → 4PCl3

Structure

The chemical formula of phosphorus trichloride is PCl3. In the structure of PCl3, the three sp3 hybrid orbitals of P overlap with the p orbital of Cl to form three-sigma P-Cl bonds, while the fourth sp3 hybrid orbital contains a single pair of electrons. PCl3, therefore, has a pyramid structure.

Phosphorus Pentachloride

Phosphorus pentachloride is a yellow-green crystalline solid with a pungent odour. It is decomposed by water to form hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid and heated. This heat may be enough to ignite surrounding combustible materials. It is corrosive to metals and substances. Long-term exposure to low concentrations or short-term exposure to high concentrations may cause adverse health effects if inhaled.

Preparation

The reactions with more than dry chlorine are often used to make pentachloride.

P4 + 10Cl2 → 4PCl5

We can also make it by combining SO2Cl2 with phosphorus.

P4 + 10SO2Cl2 → 4PCl5 + 10SO2

Chemical Properties

Phosphorus pentachloride hydrolyzes to POCl3 within the presence of wet air. Over time, this molecule degrades into orthophosphoric acid.

PCl5 +H2O → POCl3 + 2HCl

By  heating it sublimes and breaks down further into phosphorus trichloride.

Under heat, it interacts with finely partitioned metals to make metal chlorides.
