WWWC Full Form

W3C stands for World Wide Web Consortium. Learn more about the W3C full form, W3C mission, goals, principles activities, tasks performed, challenges and some FAQs.

W3C stands for World Wide Web Consortium in web development. It is an international entity that works for the development of web sources. It is the vital standard organisation for the World Wide Web. Technical standards are created, organised, promulgated, revised, amended, reissued, interpreted, or otherwise generated by the standard organisation based on the need of the user. A standard organisation also called a standard developing organisation that deals with the development of a specific set of codes. It is important to manage the overall functioning of the web and help monitor the flaws of the entire system.

What is a World Wide Web Consortium?

A World Wide Web Consortium is the lead for the World Wide Web. It develops and directs the performance of WWW to its full capabilities. It plays a key role in improving the World Wide Web’s efficiency by developing protocols, promoting evolution and ensuring mixed operations. The World Wide Web Consortium holds about 350 member organisations throughout the world. The work of WW3 has been recognised by making it an internationally standard organisation. W3C helps in enhancing the work of the Web Accessibility Initiative that includes the involvement of different stakeholders in web access. It works on concord based process development.

W3C Launch:

The World Wide Web Consortium was launched by the inventor of Web Tim Berners-Lee. It was initiated in collaboration with CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) on October 1994. It was first set at Massachusetts

Institute of Technology, Laboratory for Computer Science [MIT/LCS] and the development was supported by DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency) and the European Commission.

The mission of the World Wide Web Consortium:

The main aim of the W3C is to direct the web to continuous evolution. It provides a platform for integrated web work and a discussion platform that is accessible. W3C has improved the standard of the Web’s infrastructure by providing about 50 technical specifications. W3C works to fulfil the expectations and needs of the users. The World Wide Web Consortium’s main mission is to make an infrastructure that is adaptable, measurable and robust in the field of information technology.

Goals of W3C:

The goals that drive the web are mainly three in number. They are:

  1. Universal Access: To enable the web to cross the ethnographic barriers like language, nation, culture, community, education, resource, devices. It works to make the web accessible all around the globe.
  2. Web of Trust: Considerations based on commercial, legal and social issues related to the technology are needed. Careful development of the system is required.
  3. Semantic Trust: An user-friendly service and environment must be provided by the web. The software that aids the function must be designed in that specific manner.

Task performed by World Wide Web Consortium

The W3C specifies its task based on the user’s needs and technical evolution. The most important tasks to be performed are as follows:

  • Vision: It must be framed in such a way to bring a brighter scope for the World Wide Web
  • Design: The design is made by considering the specifications mentioned in the vision
  • Standardisation: The standards must be in union with the various departments and building blocks involved in the design of the web

W3C Design Principles:

The primary design principles involved in the World Wide Web Consortium are:

  • Interoperability: Allow access to both hardware and software to handle the web. The specifications of the web related to protocol and language must be compatible
  • Evolution: This must stay in a way to get in order with the upcoming trends in technology. Must create a strong base for the future with emerging technology
  • Decentralisation: It is the hardest and more complex principle to be achieved. It aims to cut off errors and breakdowns in the web architecture

W3C activities:

The activities are performed by receiving a precise and clear expression from the membership. The activities of the W3C are performed by considering a specific set of protocols called ‘Activity Protocol’. The activities of the World Wide Web Consortium are organised into three groups. They are:

  1. Working group
  2. Interest group
  3. Coordination group

The groups work in union with other communities. Currently, there are about 30 groups working on the web. The activities to be performed are classified into four domains. They are Architecture domain, Interaction domain, Technology and Society Domain and Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI).

Challenges faced by World Wide Web Consortium:

The W3C has a greater risk of facing various challenges when considering the future. They are:

  • Make the web compatible for all devices and new developing devices
  • To avoid difficulties faced by people belonging to different cultures, countries and languages
  • To work on the research aspects and create new specifications
  • To abide by diverse standards imposed by the international communities
  • Enhance efficient practice.

Conclusion:

The World Wide Web Consortium plays a key role in the development of the Web. It acts as a key tool in making the Web available for all individuals across the world. The continuous commutations made by W3C with emerging technology is making it a user-friendly environment. The goals, principles and mission are driven to meet the needs and expectations of the user makes it much more robust in usage by the users.
