A pie chart is a circular graph of data broken into various sized slices for comparing data or statistics distribution. Learn about pie charts’ definition, applications, and real-world examples.
What is a Pie Chart?
When you hear the term “pie,” what comes to mind? You probably envision a lovely dessert with a flaky crust and your favourite filling. A ‘pie’ is not the same as a ‘pie chart,’ despite the fact that both can be sliced into slices.
A pie chart displays data, information, and statistics in a ‘pie-slice’ format that is simple to read, with changing slice widths showing the amount of one data piece present. More data was obtained in that specific area the greater the slice.
Take, for instance, the pie chart given below. It shows the percentage of people who own different types of pets. As you can see, the ‘dog ownership’ slice is by far the largest, indicating that the majority of the people in this graph own a dog rather than a cat, fish, or other animal.
Formula
The pie chart is a useful tool for visualising data. It is divided into segments and sectors, each of which represents a portion of the pie chart (percentage). All of the data adds up to 360°.
The pie’s entire worth is always 100%.
Follow the methods below to calculate the percentage for a pie chart:
Sort the information.
Determine the total.
Sort the categories.
Calculate in percentages
Finally, figure out the degrees.
As a result, the pie chart formula is as follows:
(Given Data/Total value of Data) × 360°
How to Create a Pie Chart with Percentages
A pie chart visualises the proportions, or percentages of the total, of a group of categories. To make an appropriate pie chart, first figure out what percentage of the pie chart each category should take up. The angle that each component of the pie should have may then be calculated.
Sort your information into categories. Assign a number to each group. For example, if you have data on four different university degrees, you could want to make a pie chart out of it. You might come across the following: 410 students major in art, 420 in science, 900 in languages, and 540 in engineering.
To get the total, add all of the numbers together. In this instance:
410 + 420 + 900 + 540 = 2270410+420+900+540=2270
Divide the total by each of the categories. You’ll get a list of decimals that are less than 0. If necessary, go round. In the following example, rounding is used:
Art: 410÷2270=0.18
Science: 420÷2270=0.18
Language: 900÷2270=0.40
Engineering: 540÷2270=0.24
To determine the percentages, multiply each decimal by 100. Simply move the decimal point two places to the right to accomplish this. As an example:
18% for the arts
18% are scientists.
40 percent language
24 percent are engineers.
The labels for each part will be these percentages.
To find the number of degrees each slice of pie should take up in the pie chart, multiply the decimals from Step 3 by 360. For the categories of art, science, language, and engineering, this provides the angles 64.8, 64.8, 144, and 86.4, respectively.
Problems with Pie Charts and Solutions
Direction: The circle graph depicts a country’s spending on various sports over the course of a year. Examine the graph attentively and respond to the question that follows.
Q.1. Tennis accounts for what percentage of overall spending?
(A) 1212%
(B) 2212%
(C) 25 %
(D) 45 %
Ans . A
Solution
Tennis spending as a percentage of total spending = (45360100)% = 1212%
Directions (Questions 2–10): The pie chart below depicts the percentage distribution of the costs associated with publishing a book. Examine the pie chart and respond to the question using it as a guide.
MANY EXPENSES (IN PERCENTAGE) INVOLVED IN THE PUBLISHING OF A BOOK
Q.2. If the publisher must pay Rs. 30,600 as printing costs for a particular number of books, what is the royalty to be paid for these volumes?
(A) Rs. 19,450
(B) Rs. 21,200
(C) Rs. 22,950
(D) Rs. 26,150
Ans . C
Solution
After that, 20: 15 = 30600:r ⇒ r = Rs (3060010020)= Rs. 22950.
Q.3. The book’s price is 20 percent higher than the C.P. What is the cost of the paper used in a single copy of the book if the market price of the book is Rs. 180?
(A) Rs. 36
(B) Rs. 37.50
(C) Rs. 42
(D) Rs. 44.25
Ans . B
Solution
Also, the cost of paper is equal to 25% of the C.P.
Allow Rs. n for the cost of paper for a single book.
So, 120: 25 = 180: n ⇒ n = Rs.(25180120) = Rs. 37.50
Conclusion
Data relationships are often represented visually using graphs. The purpose of a graph is to convey information that is too large or complex to be adequately stated in language and in a limited amount of space.
