Coding and Decoding

In Logical Reasoning coding and decoding is an important section of various competitive exams. In this article, you will get a better understanding of coding and decoding aptitude and related coding and decoding questions. So, go through the complete article.

What do coding and decoding mean?

In logical Reasoning coding and decoding stands superior in various government exams like SBI PO, IBPS PO, RRB Officer Scale, etc. This is a dedicated section that is asked in exams and people find it interesting while solving the questions related to it.

The reason behind asking these questions is to check or judge the logical reasoning aptitude of an individual. One should be familiar with alphabetical order either left to right or right to left. This article contains all concepts related to coding and decoding, various solved examples, and some in-hand practice questions.

Define Coding and Decoding:

Coding and decoding is a process that involves code and decodes any letter, word, number, and sentence by following some set of patterns or rules. It can’t be achieved if one doesn’t have basic knowledge of the process involved in coding and decoding problems. It helps candidates to develop their reasoning skills and ability to focus.

When a particular question is asked related to coding-decoding then it holds some hidden tricks which help a candidate to identify it and solve it accordingly.

Types of Coding and Decoding:

Now, the basic definition of coding and decoding is clear and it is necessary to know about its various type which will help a candidate for better clarification. Therefore, here it goes

    • Letter to Number Coding:

This process of coding and decoding involves numerical code values allotted to the word or a letter and the same as to alphabetical code allotted to numbers. By applying the logic of numbers in each alphabet the resulting decode is established.

  • Letter to Letter Coding: This process of coding-decoding involves the operations like addition, subtraction, and interchanging the letters of a word. With the help of operations, candidates can obtain the code of another word.
  • Substitution Coding:

In this process of coding and decoding, a word is allotted with a substituted word, and with the help of its logic is established and helps the candidate to find another word.

Coding and Decoding Examples:

Time to see some coding and decoding examples for better understanding. Some of the examples are listed below

Example: 1 IF “EXAM” is coded as “FYBN”. Then how will code “RESULT”.

Answer: Now the first step is to establish the logic between the words. E is code with F where X is code with Y and similar goes on. See that it is an example of Letter-Number Coding. It found that there is an increment by one step in each letter. Therefore, R will code with S, E will code with F, S will code with T, and goes on.

The resulted words come to be “SFTVMU”. Hence “RESULT” is coded as “SFTVMU”.

Example: 2 If “LESD” is written “@%%EDITORCONTENT%%amp;#”. “NAC” is written “%? *”. Then how will code “CANDLES”.

Answer: The letter L is code with @ where E is code with $ and so on. By comparing all the given codes, the answer which matches the requirement is “*? %&@$#”. This is established by comparing the given values.
