Comprehension Passages

The word comprehension refers to the ability to understand what one listens to or reads. This exercise is practiced to assess clear thinking and identifying particulars within a wide area of text. Comprehension allows the reader to sharpen their ability to read, understand and interpret a given piece of information. In a comprehension test, a comprehension passage is presented where the examiner needs to answer questions from them while referring to that comprehension passage. 

Importance of Comprehension in English

There are some minor misconceptions regarding this entire process of comprehension passage. The most common misconception is that one can get the key idea of the passage by just looking at the first and last sentences of the passage. The author can use similes and proverbs to express his mood and skills to infer what is required to truly understand the essence. It is important that one feels comfortable and confident while doing comprehension and practises it frequently and continuously.

 Comprehension increases reading fluency, especially among children. A great way to encourage children to read with confidence, naturalness, and relaxation is to have them read from fictional stories or plays. This will assist them in learning proper reading skills such as adding pauses, controlling modulation, emphasizing words, and so on so that they can relate the text to their own experiences or knowledge. 

The more fluently one reads the text, the better he/she comprehends. The more one reads, the more he/she gets familiar with the words. It increases their vocabulary, and they can quickly and accurately comprehend the text.
