Industrial relations are the major aspects of the economy of any country. It plays a key role in determining the overall growth of any nation. Industrial relations can be defined as the relationship between the administration and junior employees. Better industrial relations facilitate the growth of an organisation. It also depicts the relation of employees with the labourers. It denotes the direction of the organisation in which it is growing. If Industrial relations are good in any organisation, then the growth of that organisation is imperative, as it also improves the overall working environment of the organisation. 

Industrial relations 

In simpler words, industrial relations describe the relationship between junior and senior employees in any organisation. But, its area is not limited to here only; it also describes the relations between two states, the relation between the union of two states, the relation between the two professional organisations, and the relation between the different governments. 

Approaches to industrial relations

Let’s understand the approaches to industrial relations

The approach to industrial relations is to facilitate the development of the organisation. Along with this, it has various approaches and scopes. These are:

  1. Facilitating the relations between the managers and subordinates of any firm. 
  2. Facilitate the relations between the trade unions and management employees. This type of industrial relation is called union-management relations.
  3. Facilitating the relations between associates, unions, industries and employees. This type of relation is called a collective relation.

Types of industrial relations 

Let’s understand the types of industrial relations thoroughly. 

Industrial relations denote the relationship between the employees. It is subdivided into four types. These are:

  • Labour relations
  • Group relations
  • Employer-employee relations
  • Community or Public relations

Labour relations

In this type of industrial relation, systematic management is designed to facilitate belongingness among an organisation’s employees. It is also called labour-management relations. This type of relation aims to prevent any type of disputes among the employees and promote harmony among them. 

Group relations

In this type of industrial relation, systematic management is designed to facilitate the relationship between the individual at different posts like a manager, supervisor and others. It aims to maintain a good working environment within the organisation. However, organisations with good group relations are more likely to grow faster. Although, it improves the employee’s productivity, which consequently improves the organisation’s overall productivity. 

Employer-employee relations

Employer-employee relation is a type of industrial relation in which systematic management is designed to facilitate good relations between the teams of employees. In a team, excluding the leader, all employees belong to a similar designation. So, it aims to maintain harmony between those employees who belong to the same designation. 

Community or public relations

Community or public relations describes the good relationship between the organisation and its customers. In this type of industrial relation, the organisation plans various strategies to attract customers towards their service. An organisation that has good community or public relations has high growth rates. 

Features of industrial relations 

Industrial relations bring harmony between the various organisations and their overall management. Let’s understand some salient features of industrial relations:

Interactive procedure 

Industrial relations is the interactive procedure, where the employees interact with their colleagues, their seniors and juniors. Along with this, the customers interact with the services of an organisation; organisations interact with the other organisations, and so forth. So, it helps to bring mutual understanding within the organisation or among the organisations. 

Facilitates two-way communication

In industrial relations, the employees within any firm interact with each other. While interacting, they communicate with each other and share their experiences and ideas. Along with this, different organisations also communicate and share their strategies and working processes. This facilitates two-way communication where different individuals share their ideas within the organisation. 

Practice HRM

The main aim of human resource management is to select the skilled individual who serves in the organisation’s development. When the employee and owners interact with each other, they share their ideas. This helps owners to identify the skill and capability of the individual. 

Promote the best working environment 

In an organisation where industrial relations strategies are practised properly, the working environment is always better and more productive. A good productive environment results in more productivity of employees. So, industrial relations also play a major role in enhancing the productivity of any organisation. 

Strategies to facilitate good industrial relations within an organisation 

The best strategies are:

  • Allow employees to share their ideas 
  • Treat employees as family members 
  • Motivate employees 
  • Train employees 
  • Praise employee’s success

Industrial relations play a major role in the growth and development of any industry. They facilitate a good working environment within the organisation and promote harmony among employees. Along with the internal environment, it also focuses on the external environment of any organisation as it aims to improve relations between different organisations and relations between customers and industry. Industrial relations approaches to bring productivity and expansion by promoting a good working environment. Industrial relations are the major key aspect of the growth and development of any organisation.
