List of One-Word Substitutions for Generic Terms

A phrase that is used to define some general groups or classes, that do not define some specific things is known as a Generic term. One word substitution honestly approaches the usage of a particular phrase by replacing a wordy phrase or sentence and making it shorter, concise, and clearer to apprehend.

One word substitutions are words that are used instead of a wordy sentence to mean the same idea. The best way to master this idea is to examine their meanings by placing them in a specific sentence or visualizing them through an exciting story. Here, we will discuss a few terminologies related to abdication, biopsy, and nostalgia. 

Abdication 

Abdication is the act of abandoning (discarding) the right of a person. 

The word abdication has came from the Latin word Abdico. means is to disown or discarding. In some monarchy cultures, the word abdication is used for discarding, the royal rights, duties and powers. 

In Indian history, the best example of abdication can be seen in Mauryan Dynasty. In the last years of the life of Chandragupta Maurya, he abdicated and became a Jain Monk.

Some examples of abdication used in sentences 

  1. The Militants took the liberties of Europe as a sign of political abdication.

  2. When tough problems arises, majority of the throws up its hands which is a sign of abdication of responsibility.

  3. His abdication will be judged as a failure.

Biopsy 

Biopsy is the act of removing tissue, fluids, cells from the living organisms body. 

When cancer found in any person’s body then she/he undergoes various biopsies. 

Some examples of biopsy used in sentences 

  1. A month of flu like symptoms, a repeat biopsy showed my hands to be  85 percent slow-twitch. 

  2. Doctors did a liver biopsy to see the damage from inside. 

  3. The doctors will perform a biopsy to detect cancer in my lungs. 

  4. Less than 30 minutes interval is needed between taking and freezing biopsy specimen. 

  5. On evaluating more than 53 biopsy samples, doctors f fungal skin infection in all.

Nostalgia 

Nostalgia is the feeling of affection that a person have with her or his past incidents.  The word nostalgia comes from  Greek word ‘nóstos’ which means ‘homecoming’. We can also explain nostalgia as a feeling of homesickness.

Some examples of nostalgia used in sentences 

  1. Only for nostalgia’s sake, let’s do some fun.

  2. The story about the junkie person managed to evoke nostalgia.

  3. Thinking back about the memories of childhood brings back a sense of nostalgia.

  4. Ramna enjoyed the nostalgia brought on by the show.

  5. Harry should take time to indulge in nostalgia.

  1. An act of abdicating the throne – Abdication 

  2. A fond of company – Gregarious 

  3. An arrangement of events in order of their occurrence – Chronology 

  4. Thing spoken or done without preparation – Extempore 

  5. Anything certain to happen – Inevitable 

  6. Thing safe to drink – Potable

  7. Act of releasing someone from duty – Exonerate

  8. A solution for all difficulties or remedy for all diseases – Panacea

  9. A government form in which nobility hold all powers – Aristocracy

  10. A region or country which is self governing – Autonomy 

  11. Storehouse for threshed grain – Granary

  12. A shelter for dog – Kennel

  13. A series of stars – Constellation 

  14. An arrangement of flowers given as present – Bouquet 

  15. A small fleet of ships – Flotilla 

  16. A community of people which is smaller than a village – Hamlet

  17. A person who is bad in spellings – Cacographer

  18. A person who does not believe in existence of God – Atheist 

  19. A person who makes an official arrangement of accounts – Auditor 

  20. A person who is not express himself freely – Introvert 

  21. One who is controlled by his wife – Henpeck

  22. One who is lover of good food – Gourmand

  23. A person who often talks about her/his achievements – Egotist

  24. A person who believes in date – Fatalist

  25. A mentally ill person is known as – Lunatic

Conclusion

The exercise of ‘One-word substitution’ is, also, some thing that replaces a phrase with a context however without changing the meaning of the given identical context. One-word  substitution’ is a replacement for long and prolonged sentences or definitions. It falls beneath the class of ‘Vocabulary’ as phrase, sentences, definitions are elements of a speech as well.

One word substitution clarifies a large sentence in only one word. So if while communicating we will use one word instead of speaking a large sentence, it will be more effective than using a large sentence. Communication is a necessary part of our personality and which can boost up after learning one word substitution.
