The environment consists of all things—living and nonliving—that have an impact on human existence. It is critical to the smooth operation of our daily life and must be respected. The environment/nature, as well as the magnificent species that inhabit it, existed long before the human home. Every species on the planet, whether on land or in water, coexisted harmoniously.
It was after the beginning of human civilization and industrialisation that the chaos began. In the beginning, humans used the environment as a means to an end, without giving any attention to the implications of their actions or the respect that they should have shown to the environment, which serves as a facilitator for life on Earth.
The significance of the environment in human life
- Environmental resources, which include both renewable and nonrenewable resources, are available for use in the production of goods and services.
- The environment includes the elements of sunlight, water, air, and soil, all of which are essential for human survival. It ensures the continuation of life by maintaining genetic variation and biodiversity.
- The production and consumption of activities generate waste, which is primarily in the form of garbage, which the environment assists in the removal.
- Humans are only able to appreciate the beauty of mountains, lakes, rivers, deserts, and a plethora of other stunning natural components because the environment is still in existence.
The reason for protecting the environment
- Our surroundings provide a home for our ecosystem and aids in its development. Unless we protect our ecosystem, animals, crops, and ultimately ourselves, are in risk.
- We humans would be unable to survive if there were no environment in which to dwell. We would also be unable to find other means of survival.
- Because if our environment is not preserved, forests would be extinct, and with them, the trees that supply us with the essentials for survival, such as oxygen to breathe and the materials for building, wood, oils, and a variety of other items.
- Every day, we witness an increase in the temperature of the earth. This is due to the fact that we misuse the environment rather than conserving it. Humans are responsible for a significant amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which has a significant impact on climate change.
- The environment has a positive impact on the economy as well. Increased nature-based tourism is encouraged by a healthy environment.
- Cases of Asthma and Bronchitis would diminish if we protected our environment and provided one another with a safe environment to breathe in on a consistent basis.
Environmental Disasters Teach Us Important Lessons
- On June 5, 1974, the United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day.
- World forests are being destroyed at a rate of one football field every three seconds, and we have wrecked half of our wetlands in the previous decade. As a result, World Environment Day was established with the primary goal of reviving billions of hectares of land, ranging from forests to farmlands, mountains to oceans.
- Year after year, many towns around the world organise World Environment Day celebrations, each with a different theme, such as:
- “GO FOR WILD” was the theme for the year 2016. The goal of the conference, which was held in Paris, was to limit and prevent the illegal wildlife trafficking.
- The subject for 2017 was “CONNECTING PEOPLE TO NATURE,” with the goal of making people realise how important nature is and how much it gives us with all of our needs. This event took place in Canada.
- The theme for 2018 was “BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION.” The primary goal was for people to limit their use of plastic and replace it with reusable things, as plastic, when burned or disposed of, has a negative impact on the environment. It was India that was hosting this specific Agenda.
- For the year 2019, the theme was “BEAT AIR POLLUTION.” This issue was chosen because air pollution is responsible for the deaths of over 7 million people each year. This event took place in China.
- It was decided that the theme for 2020 would be “TIME FOR NATURE,” with the goal of protecting wildlife and preventing humanity from destroying them. This event took place in Columbia.
- The subject for 2021 is “ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION,” with the goal of improving our Ecosystem. Pakistan is hosting a conference on this topic.
Water’s role in the environment
- Water for the environment helps rivers, creeks, and wetlands return to natural flow. Dams and weirs have improved water security for people but interrupted the natural flow cycle required for river and wetland health.
- Demand for river water has reduced the amount available to support these floodplain habitats. In order to feed, breed, and produce plants and animals, environmental water is employed to target certain results. It is vital to the health of rivers and wetlands, and also the communities that rely on them.
- River systems benefit recreation, tourism, agriculture, industry, and public health.Water for the environment helps the river stay healthy so it can meet human needs.Floodwaters discharge carbon into the floodplain, energising the food chain.Fisheries are triggered by river pulses. These wetlands allow juvenile fish to eat and grow before returning to the river.
- River sediment feeds soils and provides grazing habitat for native animals and livestock.Birds prefer healthy wetlands. This attracts birdwatchers to rivers and wetlands.Wetlands are the streams’ kidneys. Aquatic plants filter water as it passes through the system, slowing flows and nutrient cycling.
- During watering, these plants blossom and seed, providing food and refuge for insects, frogs, reptiles, and mammals.Woodland birds benefit from a good wetland. They feed, breed, and travel throughout the landscape, pollinating plants and controlling nuisance insects
- Wetlands also attract migrating waterbirds, some of which fly thousands of kilometers to feed or breed. Water for the environment is critical to maintaining a healthy river system for plants, animals, and people.
CONCLUSION:
From the following article we can conclude that The environment includes all objects, living and nonliving, that influence human existence. It is vital to our daily lives and must be respected. Nature and the amazing species that inhabit it predate human habitation. On land or on water, all animals coexisted peacefully. The chaos began with the dawn of human civilisation and industrialisation. Initially, humans treated the environment as a means to an end, without regard for the consequences of their activities or the ecosystem’s role as a facilitator for life on Earth.
