The Reformation along with the Renaissance and the geographical discoveries completed the transition of Europe from medievalism to modernity. The Reformation sought to cleanse the degeneration within Christianity and led to the formation of the third branch of Christianity- the Protestants. It relegated the authority of the Church to spiritual matters alone and this change in the religious sphere percolated down to the political, economic and cultural spheres.
