  4. TAXES Great Britain tried to recover war debts and expenditure by taxing the American colonies. . Sugar Act of 1764 Gave British courts the right to tax colonial smugglers, taking the right away from colonial courts (who had been lenient when it came to enforcing anti-smuggling)


  5. TAXES Stamp Act 1765 Any printed material in the colonies to be produced on stamped paper. . This paper was produced in London, and was taxed. Stamp Act Congress : Americans decided to boycott British goods [first major coordinated action by the colonies together]. Street actions (by the 'Sons of Liberty') and talk of liberty became frequent. British Parliament repealed the Stamp Act.
