  3. Longest chain rule:- Select the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms which may or may not be horizontal. This is called parent chain or main chain, and other carbon chains attached to it are known as side chain 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C-C-C-C-C-0-C C-C-C-C-C-C-C Straight parent chain of C, with three side chains (Right) Zig-zag parent chain of C, with only one side chain (Wrong)

  4. Lowest number or lowest sum rule The longest carbon chain is numbered as 1,2,3... Etc. starting from the end that gives a smallest possible number(s) to the substituent(s) C-C-C-C-C-C C-C-C-C-C-C Substituent at C (correct) Vincorret) Substituent at C (incorrect)

  5. In case, the parent chain has two or more substituents, numbering must be done in such a waythat the sum of the locants on the parent chain is the lowest possible. C-C-C-C-C-C C-C-C-C-C-C Sum of locants : 2 + 3+4=9 (correct) Sum of locants : 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 (incorrect)

  6. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 W_ 1A3 5/ 7 CH CH-CH-CHCH-CH-CH 7 6.5 4-13 2.1 Correct numbering rong numdering 3-Ethy-5-methylheptane 3-5thy-5-methylheptane

  7. when two chains of equal length compete for section as the parent chain, choose the chain with the greater number of substituent. 6 2 CH3 CH2 CH- CH- CH CH CH3 CH3 CH2 CH3 CH3 CH2 CH3 2,3,5-Trimethyl-4-propylhelptane (four substituents)
