Two of the most prominent mechanical properties are resilience and toughness. The ability of the material to absorb energy or stresses in elastic region is called as resilience. Whereas, the ability of material to absorb shock and stresses in elastic region is called as toughness. The features of resilience is very much important while selecting materials for specific applications. The toughness property of a material finds application where ocassional loading or stresses are developed. Different classification of toughness like impact toughness, notch toughness and fracture toughness are discussed in this lesson. The importance of performing Charpy and Izod test are discussed briefly in this lesson. The impact toughness test plays an important role in understanding the relevance of the material while under impact loading. Notch toughness test is done to materials or specimens that have a flaw. The toughness of these king of specimen is comparatively very low. The different classification of fracture toughness is also discussed briefly in this lesson.
