Hardness of the material is the ability of the material to resist indentation, penetration or scratch. Hardness is one of the prominent mechanical property when it comes to specific applications like using carburized steel in machine building operations. The hardness of material can be determined by conducting various hardness test. Mohs hardness scale for many minerals are also discussed in this lesson. Rockwell hardness test, Brinell hardness test and Vickers hardness test are the different test procedures used to determine hardness of a material. The usage of diamond and steel ball indenters in various hardness test are also discussed in this lesson. The various scales in which hardness of a material can be determined is also discussed in this lesson. The application of minor load and major load with its generalized concept is discussed in this lesson. Hardness test with the help of optical microscope is done for specimens of small size. Microhardness test is very much efficient in determining the hardness of small specimens.
