Human Geography Class 12: Examples of Tertiary Sector

The Human Geography Class 12: Examples of Tertiary Sector states that developed nations employ a larger share of people in the service sector than developing nations. The employment trend in this industry has also been increasing rapidly.

An industry is defined as the systematic production of goods and services for commercial sale. The industry of a country determines its economy. In this article, we’ll look at the economic transformation by discussing the three types of economic sectors: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

Some Examples of Tertiary Sector

Tourism:

  • Tourism refers to travel that is done for pleasure rather than work
  • Tourism has surpassed all other tertiary activities in terms of registered jobs and overall revenue contribution to global GDP
  • Local job creation: Many local people get employment by offering services such as lodging, food, transportation, entertainment and specialty stores for tourists
  • The Tourism and hospitality industry encourages the development of infrastructure, retail commerce, and artisan industries (souvenirs)

Tourist Regions:

  • The milder climates of the Mediterranean Coast and India’s West Coast are among the world’s most popular tourist attractions
  • Winter sporting zones, mostly in mountainous locations, different picturesque landscapes and national parks are among the other popular tourist regions
  • Tourists flock to historic cities to visit monuments, heritage sites and attend cultural events

Commerce and Trade

The trade and commerce segment of tertiary sector activities is further classified into two types, which are listed below:

  • Wholesale business
  • The retail trade
  • Wholesale Business

The wholesale trade segment is further subdivided into two types, which are discussed below:

  • Mandies from the countryside
  • Urban supply stores
  • Trade in Retail

The retail trade is divided into two categories, which are as follows: Urban and rural areas. The rural subsegment of the retail trade is further subdivided as follows:

  • Stores on the street
  • Markets that occur on a regular basis
  • Urban Public Distribution System (PDS)

The urban sub-segment of the retail trade is further classified as follows:

  • System of Public Distribution (PDS)
  • Purchasing by Mail – This segment is divided into two parts: internet and telephone.
  • Convenient Shopping Malls
  • Shops in Chains
  • Transportation

The transportation segment is critical for transporting raw materials and manufactured goods from one location to another. It facilitates the consumption and distribution of goods. It is a well-organized industry. Transportation is one of the four major types of tertiary activities. This classification is further subdivided into four distinct categories:

Farming: Farmers use their land to cultivate plants and raise animals that can be used to produce food or other goods. Agriculture is one of the primary industries that comprise the primary sector. It is the ability to produce raw food through farming techniques.

Raw materials, textiles, food, and fuel are the four categories of goods. Eggs, milk, vegetables, meat, oil, and fruits are all included in the food category. Cotton, which is used to make clothing, is also used in agriculture as a raw material.

Mining is the extraction of raw materials from the earth, such as rock, sand, metals, clay, gemstones, and minerals. A mining corporation’s reserves and resources are its most valuable assets. The modern mining process includes calculating the potential profit.

The secondary sector is also heavily reliant on mining for raw materials in order to manufacture and produce a diverse range of key products. Mining also includes nonrenewable resources such as natural gas, petroleum, and water.

Fishing: Fishing is one of the world’s most important primary industries. It entails a variety of tasks, including selling, shipping, marketing, preserving, and processing fish products. Industrial fish farming is the world’s fastest-growing food production method, supplying nearly half of the world’s seafood.

Factors Affecting Tourism:

●   Demand:

⮚     The need for vacations has surged due to the improvements in the living standards of an individual

⮚     Increased spare time has enabled more individuals to take leisure vacations

●   Transport:

⮚     Transportation improvements have assisted in the opening of new tourist regions

⮚     Travelling by automobiles is more convenient because of improved road networks

⮚     The growth of air transportation has substantially increased in recent years. Air travel, for example, reduces a lot of travel time

Examples of Tertiary Sector, Tourist Attractions:

●   Climate:

⮚  For beach vacations, most individuals from colder climates expect pleasant and sunny weather. This is one of the primary reasons for Tourism’s prominence in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region

⮚ During the peak holiday season, the Mediterranean climate offers warmer temperatures than other regions of Europe, long hours of sunlight and minimal rainfall

⮚ People on winter vacations have specific climatic needs, such as lower temperatures than their native countries or adequate snow cover for skiing and other snow sports

  • Landscape:
    • Many individuals choose to spend their vacations in a beautiful setting which commonly includes mountains, lakes, gorgeous seacoasts and natural landscapes that have not been fully altered by civilization.
  • History and Art:
    • An area’s history and art offerings have the potential to be appealing. People enjoy visiting castles, cathedrals, archaeological sites and monasteries in historic or scenic cities
  • Culture and Economy:
    • These factors draw visitors who want to learn about ethnic and local cultures
  • Cost:
    • If visiting a location is cost-effective from the expectations point of view of a tourist, it is likely to grow in popularity. For example, heritage residences in Goa, Madikeri and Coorg of Karnataka have transformed into thriving businesses over the past few years

Medical Tourism in India:

Medical Tourism: Medical Tourism is a term used to describe a trip where medical care is mixed with foreign tourism activities.

  • India accounts for around 18% of the worldwide Medical Tourism business. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Medical Tourism in India can reach $ 9 billion by 2020, accounting for 20% of the worldwide industry
  • World-class hospitals are positioned in India’s major cities to serve patients from all around the world
  • Emerging economies gain immensely from Medical Tourism
  • Aside from Medical Tourism, the trend of outsourcing medical testing and data interpretation is also gaining traction

⮚  Various medical services have been performed in multiple hospitals across Australia, Switzerland and India. The services offered range from reading radiological pictures to interpreting MRIs and ultrasound testing

⮚  When it comes to enhancing the quality of or offering specialised treatment, outsourcing has a lot of benefits for individuals

 Conclusion:

The tertiary sector encompasses a diverse range of activities, including commerce, administration, transportation, financial and real estate activities, business and personal services, education, health, and social work

It is composed of two parts: the market services sector (trade, transportation, financial operations, business services, personal services, accommodation and food service activities, real estate, and information-communication); and the non-market services sector (public administration, education, human health, social work activities).

The tertiary sector’s perimeter is thus defined by its complementarity with agricultural and industrial activities (the primary and secondary sectors).
