On 28 th of October 2021, the7 th stealth Frigate of the Indian Navy was launched at the Yantar Shipyard at Kaliningrad in Russia.

Stealth frigate

Meaning

Stealth Frigates are ships that use stealth technology in their construction process so that the ship is harder to detect by various detection techniques like the radar methods, infrared methods, sonar methods and visual methods.

The stealth technology uses Acoustic quieting which helps in decreasing the sound of the ship while it moves. The process damps the vibrations and hence prevents the vibrations from reaching the sonar detection system therefore the detection of the submarine or the frigate is difficult. Other concepts like radar cross-section reduction is a process that tells how detectable an object is on the radar.

Frigate

A frigate is a type of ship or warship that has played different roles across different centuries.

According to the 17 th century Frigate is defined as the one that is built for manoeuvrability and speed.

The term Frigate is used generally for ships too small to stand in the line of battle. While in 18 th century frigates were described as fully rugged ships.

Stealth technology

Stealth means secretive. So stealth technology is a way in which weaponry is made invisible. It is a way to camouflage the weapons so that they cannot be seen and can ambush the event

Stealth Technology is also known as low observable technology. Stealth Technology is a Sub-discipline of military tactics wherein a range of measures and techniques are used to make the aircraft, ships, submarines, ground vehicles, missiles and Satellites invisible to detection by the radar, infrared sonar and other detection technologies that are used. So simply put Stealth technology is a Military camouflage used to make the defence weapons invisible to detection.

So stealth technology aims to hide while operating so that the enemy doesn’t get aware of the presence. The stealth concept started with camouflage to blend into the environment.

Tushil

Tushil is a Sanskrit word which means Protector shield. The ship was named Tushil by Datla Vidya Varma .The ship is built under the project 1135.6 class which is also known as the Talwar class and the Talwar class frigates are built by Russia. It is built based on the intergovernmental agreement of the year 2016 between the government of India and the Government of the Russian Federation which was later signed in the year 2018. As per reports, Tushil will be commissioned into the Indian Navy in mid-2023 followed by its sister ship by the end of 2023. It is the 7 th stealth  Frigate of the Indian Navy.

The agreement encompasses the construction of four ships out of which two will be built in Russia while the other two will be built at the Goa shipyard limited.

The construction of these ships is to fulfil the specific needs of the Indian Navy in all aspects of naval warfare be it Air, surface to surface or subsurface.

These ships have the best state of the art Indian and Russian Weaponry and seniors. In terms of Indian weaponry, the ships have the surface to surface missile, Surface Surveillance Radar, Sonar System, Communication Suite and ASW system while in terms of Russian weaponry the ships have Russian surface to air missile and guns mounts. The ships can operate in Blue or Littoral water and as a single unit or in a naval task force.

A striking feature of these ships is the stealth technology in terms of its low radar and underwater noise signatures.

Conclusion
