- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was created under the National Disaster Management Act of 2005. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was established under the Disaster Management Act with the goal of providing a specialised response to natural and manmade disasters. Under the Government of India, NDRF comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- The National Disaster Response Force now consists of 15 battalions from the BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, and Assam Rifles (as of November 2021). Engineers, technicians, electricians, dog squads, and medical/ paramedics are among the 45 members of each battalion’s self-contained specialised search and rescue teams. Each battalion has a total strength of 1,149 soldiers. All 15 battalions have been outfitted and prepared to deal with both natural and man-made calamities.
- Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) battalions are also trained and equipped to respond to CBRN events.
By conducting highly skilled rescue and relief operations, regular and intensive training and re-training, familiarisation exercises within the respective NDRF Battalions’ areas of responsibility, and conducting mock drills and joint exercises with the various stakeholders, the NDRF has demonstrated its significance in achieving this vision.
