The Bison (Rajbari) National Park

A national park is an area that is reserved for the protection of wildlife and biodiversity. The Bison (Rajbari) National Park in Tripura, India, is one of the most popular national parks in India. It is a part of the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in South Tripura. The beautiful surroundings and diverse wildlife species make this national park a sight to behold. The Bison (Rajbari) National Park was established to protect the Indian gaur, also known as bison. Today, it is home to various wild animals like pheasants, golden langurs, deer, etc. 

History

The Bison (Rajbari) National Park in Tripura, India, was established in 2007 to protect the Indian gaur, a type of bison. The Indian gaur has been categorised as Vulnerable since 1986. The Tripura State Government and Forest Department oversee the park’s facilities and infrastructure to ensure that the bison and other animals are safe from threats.

Geography

It is located in the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Joychandrapur district of Tripura, India. It covers a total area of 31.63 square kilometres of the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, which is 163.08 square kilometres. 

The national park is rich in biodiversity and has many water bodies and rivers nearby. Thus, the plants and animals in the park receive consistent water supply and proper nourishment. 

Climate

The Bison (Rajbari) National Park has a pleasant climate. Humidity levels tend to be higher in this region. In summer, the park’s temperature reaches 25-30 degrees Celsius. In the winter months, it drops to 10 degrees Celsius. The monsoon season in the Bison (Rajbari) National Park lasts from July to September. The park experiences a relatively dry climate from November until February.

Flora

The Bison (Rajbari) National Park is home to a diverse range of flora species that can be found throughout the park and its surrounding areas. There are around 230 varieties of trees, 110 different shrub species, more than 150 climber species and 400 herb species. 

The Park contains four distinct types of forests: 

• Deciduous with a mixed moist climate

• Tropical semi-evergreen

• Eastern Himalayan

• Savannah

The open plain, grassy terrain, and sparse trees and shrubs of the Savannah are ideal for bison. Rudraksh, tulsi, and kalmegh are some medicinal plants found in the park. Bamboo is abundant in this sanctuary because it is a favourite food of the bison. In addition, the park is well-known for its floral diversity.

Fauna

As the name suggests, the Indian bison is the main attraction of this park. However, the Rajbari National Park has a wide variety of fauna species, including wild boars, wild cats, and leopards. Gibbons, langurs, and other monkeys also reside here.

The area has many rivers and lakes and is home to several migratory birds. Important bird species like the tailorbird, pheasant tailed Jacana, pheasants, white-breasted kingfisher, hornbill, and Indian black drongo are found here.
