Semantic Classification Reasoning Questions

Learn in detail about the type of semantic classification questions and the easy ways or steps to solve them.

General intelligence and reasoning are defined as a person’s ability to perform mental tasks. General intelligence is generally the indication of any person’s IQ. If a person has a higher IQ he is intelligent. General intelligence is also termed the G-factor.

In 1904, Charles Spearman introduced the concept of general intelligence. According to him, the general intelligence of any person depends on quantitative reasoning, fluid reasoning, visual-spatial processing, knowledge, and working memory.

Tips To Solve Semantic Reasoning Questions

In semantic classification, the questions are based on similarities. In these questions, three or four numbers/words are given, out of which we need to find the odd one out. Let us see some examples.

Question: Find the odd word out of the given words.

Kite:plane:Eagle:Car

Solution:

Here we can see that the three words Kite, Plane and Eagle fly in the sky while the car runs on the road, so the car is an odd word between the three of them.

1. In semantic analogy, one word will be related to the other word in a certain manner. The question would have other words as well. We need to find suitable words which are related to each other or are odd ones. For example, an umbrella is related to rain, and a sweater is related to winter.

2. Questions related to alphabetical codes will have alphabetical letters arranged in a sequence. To find out the answer, we need to find the sequence of alphabets and their code.

Example:

If ABCD:HIJK::CDEF:?

Solution

Here A is coded with the seventh alphabet, that is H. Similarly, B is coded as its 7th alphabet, that is I; similarly, C is coded as its 7th alphabet is J and so on.

So to find out how CDEF will be coded in the same manner as ABCD we will follow the same coding pattern.

C will be coded with its 7th alphabet J

D will be coded with its 7th alphabet K

E will be coded with its 7th alphabet L

F will be coded with its 7th alphabet M

So, CDEF will be coded as JKLM

3. Semantic classification using numbers – In these types of questions one number will be related to the other with some logical coding. We need to find that logic to solve the problem. For an example-

Question: 64:80::216:?

Solution:

In the given question, 64 is related to 80 in some mathematical operations, so we will find out this operation. We will solve the other number with the same mathematical operation to find the answer.

Here 64 is written as 43 + 42 = 64 + 16 = 80

Now for 216, we will follow the same logic 63 + 62 = 216 + 36 = 252

So 216 will be related to the number 252 in the same manner 64 is related to 80.

Conclusion

In this article, we have learned about general intelligence and reasoning. It is the mental ability of any person. General intelligence and reasoning show spatial visualisation and quantitative reasoning. In semantic classification, the questions are based on similarities. In these questions three or four numbers/words are given; out of which we need to find the odd one out based on a logic/formula/other types of reasoning.
