Earthquake

The seismicity of a place refers to the number of earthquakes that occur in a given location over time. Non-earthquake seismic disturbances are also referred to as tremors.

According to the United States Geological Survey, Chile had one of the greatest earthquakes ever on March 22, 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5. Similarly, on March 11, 2011, Japan had one of the worst economic disasters in its history as a result of a massive earthquake.

Causes of earthquakes

The inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust are the four primary layers that make up the Earth’s structure. The crust and upper part of the mantle operate as a thin layer of skin on our planet’s surface. This layer of skin that covers the earth’s surface is not uniform or in one piece; rather, it is made up of several components that fit together like jigsaw pieces. These puzzle pieces are always moving, slowly sliding past one another and colliding. These puzzles are known as tectonic plates, and plate boundaries are the margins of these plates. The faults that sit within plate borders all around the planet are where the majority of earthquakes occur. The rough edges stick to each other due to friction between the plates, while the remaining components move. The margins of the plate move apart once a specific distance has been pushed, resulting in an earthquake.

Types of earthquakes

  1. Collapse Earthquakes: These earthquakes are usually smaller and most typically occur near underground mines, which is why they’re called mine bursts. The pressure created within the rocks causes collapse earthquakes. This type of earthquake causes the ceiling of the mines to fall, causing further tremors. Small cities with underground mines experience a lot of collapse earthquakes.
  2. Induced earthquakes: Human activity, such as the construction of tunnels, the filling of reservoirs, and the implementation of geothermal or projects that take place beneath the earth’s crust, such as the usage of TNT, causes induced quakes.
  3. Tectonic earthquakes: Tectonic quakes are earthquakes induced by tectonic plates. These are the most common earthquakes on the planet, and they mainly happen at the tectonic plate boundaries.
  4. Volcanic earthquakes: Active volcanism causes volcanic quakes. They are not as violent as tectonic quakes, but they do happen frequently near the surface. As a result, they are most commonly felt near the hypocenter.
  5. Explosion earthquakes: The explosion of chemical and nuclear equipment causes these earthquakes. Because the rocks on each side of the fault are displaced during this sort of earthquake, it can be measured using a GPS device by the motion of major tectonic earthquakes.

Measurement of earthquakes

The amount of force or energy produced by earthquakes is measured. The Richter scale is used for this. Richter’s scale, developed by American seismologists Charles F. Richter and Beno Gutenberg in 1935, quantifies the size of a tremor. The magnitude of the quake is calculated using the logarithm of the tallest seismic wave aligned to a scale by a seismograph.

The Richter scale was created to measure the magnitude of seismic shocks of moderate size, ranging from 3 to 7. By providing a number that allows the size of one quake to be compared to the size of another. Seismographs may now be tuned to register Richter sizes, and new methodologies for calculating tremor magnitude have been developed to produce findings that are comparable to those obtained using the Richter scale.

Impacts of earthquakes

Earthquakes cause immense devastation and loss of lives and property. Many structures, like schools and hospitals, are destroyed as a result of it. A large number of individuals are killed or severely injured. It wreaks havoc on the region and the lives of the people who live there.

Surface faulting, tectonic uplift and subsidence, tsunamis, soil liquefaction, ground resonance, landslides, and ground failure are some of the environmental repercussions of earthquakes. Earthquakes can also start forest fires and cause flooding if dams or reservoirs are destroyed.
