Makar Sankranti 2022 Date,When Sun God enters Capricorn, it is called Makar Sankranti. But this year, Makar Sankranti is being celebrated on the 14th and 15th of January due to differences in the Panchang regarding the change of the Sun’s zodiac sign. In Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, Sankranti is being celebrated on January 14. On the other hand, according to the Panchang in Banaras, Ujjain, and the rest of the country, the Sun will enter Capricorn on the night of January 14 at around 08:49. For this reason, some people are celebrating Makar Sankranti 2022 on January 15. According to the latitude-longitude of different places, there is a time difference in the sun’s zodiac change as a result of sunrise. This time also, the same illusion will remain that Sankranti should be celebrated on 14th or 15th January. 

Importance of Makar Sankranti 

Makar Sankranti is the date from which the north direction of the Sun starts. The period from Karaka Sankranti to Makar Sankranti is known as Dakshinayana.

According to the scriptures, Dakshinayana signifies the Lord’s night or a sign of negativity, and Uttarayana is considered to symbolise the Lord’s day or a sign of positivity. Since the sun starts its journey towards the north, people take a holy dip in the Ganges, Godavari, Krishna, Yamuna river, chant mantras, etc., at holy places. Generally, the Sun affects all the zodiac signs, but it is said that from the religious point of view, the entry of the Sun into Cancer and Capricorn is extremely fruitful.

 Sankranti is known as the period when the Sun enters the second zodiac. Hence the entry of the Sun into Capricorn is known as Makar Sankranti. It is believed that all the gods and goddesses came to earth during this period. Souls get salvation. Charity and religious functions are of utmost importance and are considered an important part of this day.

Donating rice, Sesame and jaggery after bathing in holy water is considered auspicious and important. Sesame is used extensively in the cuisine of Makar Sankranti. On the day of Makar Sankranti, the smell of things made of Sesame was felt everywhere. Eating and donating sesame seeds is considered auspicious on this day. Sesame massage, Sesame oil, Bath with a mixture of water and Sesame, Paan of a mixture of Sesame and water, Sesame havan, Eating and donating things of Sesame destroys sins and increases encouraging results.

Significance of Donation on Makar Sankranti 

The importance of doing charity on the day of Makar Sankranti is much more than on other days. On this day, food, sesame, and jaggery should be donated to the poor. Donating sesame seeds, sweets (laddoos), or other food items made from sesame is considered auspicious. On the day of Makar Sankranti, everyone should donate according to their power.

Historical Significance of Makar Sankranti:

There are various historical facts related to the celebration of Makar Sankranti. Lord Ashutosh gave the knowledge of the soul to Lord Vishnu. Capricorn is the sign of Saturn. On the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun enters the sign of Saturn. Sun God is the father of Shani. From this day, the gates of heaven open, so people celebrate this auspicious occasion. From this day, the days of the gods also started. According to religious scriptures, the Sun in Dakshinayana is called the night of the gods, and Uttarayan is called the day. The duration of Uttarayana and Dakshinayana is 6-6 months.

In the Mahabharata period, Bhishma Pitamah had the boon of death. Even while lying on the bed of arrows, he did not sacrifice his life in Dakshinayana and waited for the sun to leave in Uttarayan. It is believed that on the day of Makar Sankranti when the sun entered Uttarayan, Bhishma Pitamah left his body. According to religious scriptures, deities and pilgrimages reside in the water on this day.

This festival is considered the most auspicious occasion and is one of the few Hindu festivals aligned with the solar cycle. It marks the beginning of the harvest season when people worship new crops and share them with delight. This festival formed by the entry of the Sun into Capricorn and the combination of Maghmah marks the beginning of the day of all the gods. There is a confluence of the holy river Ganga, the Yamuna, and Saraswati, for bathing, chanting, and charity.
