The general movement of a mass of oceanic water in a definite direction is called ocean current which is more or less similar to water streams (rivers) flowing on the land surface of the earth.

Ocean currents are divided on the basis of temperature into
(i) warm currents
(ii) cold currents.

Warm Currents: They flow in low latitudes and from low latitudes to high latitudes.

Cold Currents: They flow in high latitudes and from high latitudes to low latitudes.
