Gastrointestinal hormones are classified into following families : 1) Gastrin family. 2) Secretin family. 3) other polypeptides. Now, the secretin family includes secretin, GIP, VIP and glucagon. Glucagon is a product of preproglucagon. Also GLP is also produced from the same. Glucagon is a hyperglycaemic hormone. It is antagonistic to insulin (hypoglycaemic hormone). Deficiency in insulin secretion or defect in it's action leads to diabetes mellitus.
