This lesson describes the major studies conducted in the field of willpower research & their outcomes. It start with Marshmallow experiment of Walter Mischel at Stanford, which concluded that children who could resist eating a marshmallow for 15 minutes went on to develop as a more successful adult. The lesson then talks about the other self-regulation research and finally it concludes with the research conducted in Dunedin, New Zealand.

  1. SCIENTIFIC SHORTCUTS TO SUCCESS: INCREASING WILLPOWER OUR BIGGEST ASSET 1.4 MAJOR RESEARCHES & THEIR OUTCOMES Presented by Roman Saini

  2. Marshmallow experiment

  3. 15 mins

  4. Marshmallow experiment . Walter Mischel : Stanford, 1960s Temptation of instant gratification vs Virtue of delayed gratification 4 year old kids o Marshmallow (spongy, sugary confectionary) 2 choices: Can eat one, or wait for 15 minutes till researcher return and then they will get one more

  5. Marshmallow experiment #3 results: Some ate right away, some resisted for sometime but gave in, some toughed it out and got the reward after 15 minute Those who saw through the 15 minutes, did that by distracting themselves e Why are we talking about it then?

  6. Results . Those who waited out for 15 minutes were tracked down later in life. As compared to ho gave up, they had: e Better marks in schools - Got much higher score in SATs e Better relationships with their classmates, teachers and friends . More salaries . Less chances of drug use e More healthy : More exercise, less BMIs less chance of obesity

  7. Results . It shocked the entire scientific community Anything as trivial as a 'stupid' 15 minute test conducted on a child had such a profound predictive value in a fully grown up adult, even after so many years Most scientist of the time thought there is almost zero correlation between childhood and adult life

  8. Self regulation research Failure to self-regulate is causing many problems in our times (domestic violence, rape, assault, road rage etc.) or otherwise advance (unlike most medical and engineering students in India), and will eSelf control is even more important than IQ in achieving success (academioc . They will be more attentive, attend almost all the classes, will study in be better prepared for exams Work place : People prefer to work with and under managers, who have high self control, higher EQ and hence less SAD

  9. Self regulation research e Can empathise with others, understand their problem and find arn e Less likely to get angry (even if they get angry, less likely to fight Prisoners who have low self esteem have a very high probability of appropriate solution to it as well verbal or physical) committing a felony and be back in jail
