Oscar Wilde: 'I can resist everything except temptation."
Identification among people When asked to identify their biggest strength, people say they are honest, hardworking,p 1, loyal, d Willpower or self control is something they will never associate with themselves . When asked why do they fail so often and are unable to achieve, thern the answer is again a lack of willpower.
In general, politicians, scientists, social activists etc. try to blame the environment and situation . They will hardly say because of genes of an individual or because he of his willpower, he/she is a success/failure (politically incorrect, difficult to fix) Since, zero emphasis is given on understanding willpower (especially in developing nations like India), hardly any development happens eIt remains like a muscle which is never exercised
Willpower in resisting urges A research conducted in Germany using beepers found that roughly 25% of waking hours is spend in resisting urges (4 hours everyday!) e Common urges include: . Eat . Sleep o Pleasure activity like reading a book, watching a movie etc. . Sexual urges . Internet
Willpower in resisting urges casily than others e Surfing FB, playing a game on mobile, eating a small cookie, relaxing instead of studying/working etc. are almost impossible to resist (very small investment) e Sexual urges, sleeping, shopping etc. are easier to control (as relatively large investment) In general, these people succeeded every other time (50%)
