SSC CHSL Exam Pattern

The pattern of the SSC CHSL examination is mentioned below. Candidates can check the pattern of the exam to get a detailed idea for preparations. 

The examination pattern of Tier 1 is as follows:

  • The tier I examination consists of objective type, MCQ questions only
  • The questions will be in English and Hindi for parts II, III and IV
  • For every correct answer, the candidate will be awarded 2 marks and also there will be a penalty of  0.50 marks for every wrong answer
  • Marks will be normalised according to the formula mentioned in the official notification
  • The examining body will decide the final merit and cut-off marks 
  • Tentative answer keys will be uploaded on the official website 
  • These can be challenged by the candidates after paying the required fee in case of doubt

Tier II (Descriptive Paper)

  • Tier-II Paper is a descriptive paper that will have 100 marks
  • The exam will be held in Pen and Paper Mode
  • The duration of the exam is 1 hour (20 minutes compensatory time will also be provided to the candidates eligible for scribe)
  • The Paper will consist of writing an Essay/ Letter/ Application/ Precis writing and so on
  • Students need to score a minimum of 33 per cent to qualify for the exam
  • The paper will be in Hindi or in English
  • Papers written partly in English or Hindi will be awarded zero marks
  • Candidates need to fill in the correct Roll Number wherever mentioned on the Cover Page Candidates need to affix their signature and Left Hand Thumb Impression in the relevant columns in the Answer Book
  • Any answer book that doesn’t have Roll Number, Signature and Left-hand Thumb Impression shall be awarded zero marks
  • Candidates should not mention any personal identity e.g. name, roll number, mobile number, address, etc. inside the Answer Book 
  • Candidates who don’t adhere to these instructions will be awarded zero marks even if marks are awarded during the evaluation process

Tier-III (Skill Test/ Typing Test)

  • Skill Test/ Typing Test will be conducted on the computers provided by the Commission or authorised agency
  • The test will be conducted in the cities that have Regional Offices of the Commission or as decided by the Commission
  • The test will be of qualifying nature
  • Errors will be calculated up to 2 decimal places

Skill Test for Data Entry Operator

  • For Data Entry Operators, a skill test is a must
  • The speed of ‘Data Entry’ is 8,000 (Eight Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on
  • Computer’ is judged based on the entry of correct words or depressions given in the passage
  • The duration of the test is 15 (Fifteen) minutes 
  • The printed matter in English, which contains approximately 2000-2200 key depressions, is given to every candidate
  • One needs to enter the same into the computer

Skill Test for Data Entry Operator Grade A

  • The ‘speed of 15000 (Fifteen Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer’ is judged based on the entry of the correct entry of words/ key depressions according to the given passage
  • The duration of the exam is 15 minutes
  • Candidates eligible for scribe are allowed a compensatory time of 5 minutes 
  • A printed matter in English  with approximately 3700-4000 key depressions is given to the candidate
  • They need to enter the same in the Computer

Typing Test for LDC/ JSA and Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant

  • The Typing Test will be Hindi or English
  • Candidates need to choose a medium of Typing Test (i.e. either Hindi or English) in the online Application Form
  • The choice given by the candidate shall be treated as final and no changes will be entertained later
  • Candidates opting for English need to have a typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) 
  • Candidates opting for Hindi should have a typing speed of 30 words per minute (w.p.m.)
  • The speed is judged based on the typing accuracy on the Computer of  the given text passage within 10 minutes
  • Candidates eligible for scribe are given extra 5 minutes
  • Passage Dictators are available for VH candidates who opted for scribe in the online Application Form
  • The Passage Dictator needs to read out the passage to the VH candidate within the allowed time
  • Persons with Disabilities candidates who are permanently unfit to appear for the Typing Test may be exempted from appearing and qualifying for the test, with the prior approval of the Commission
  • However, such a candidate will need to submit a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Commission from the competent Medical Authority, which declares him/ her as permanently unfit for the Typing Test
  • In addition, the candidates also have to furnish the relevant Medical Certificate in the prescribed format at the time of Typing Test  to support their claim or else the claim of seeking exemption will not be accepted by the Commission
