State Food Safety Index (SFSI)

Why in News:

• The 5th edition of the State Food Safety Index shows a decline in food safety performance for most major states compared to 2019.

About the Index:

• The SFSI is a benchmarking model that uses both quantitative and qualitative measures to assess food safety standards.
• It is released annually by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on World Food Safety Day, observed on June 7th, starting from 2019.

Data Source:

• The index is compiled based on information provided by States and Union Territories (UTs).

Purpose:

• Its primary goal is to evaluate and compare the performance of different states and UTs in India on various food safety parameters.
