Why in News?
- Four countries across three continents, all part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, have accused India of conducting espionage operations. India has denied these allegations.
About the Five Eyes Intelligence-sharing Network:
- Members: The Five Eyes network consists of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
- Function: This alliance focuses on surveillance and signals intelligence (SIGINT).
- Origin:
- 1946: Originated from the UK-USA Agreement, the network was initially aimed at sharing signals intelligence among the member countries post-World War II.
- 1948: Canada joined the network.
- 1956: Australia and New Zealand were added.
- Classification and Sharing: Intelligence shared within this network is strictly classified as ‘Secret—AUS/CAN/NZ/UK/US Eyes Only’. This classification underscores the exclusivity and high level of trust among the members.
- Scope and Evolution: Originally limited to communication intelligence, the network’s activities now encompass a broad range of intelligence and security operations globally.
