Features of INS Vikrant
- The 262-meter-long INS Vikrant has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes, much larger and more advanced than its predecessor.
- It is powered by four gas turbines totaling 88 MW of power.
- Maximum Speed: 28 knots
- Cost: Rs 20,000 crore
- Using a novel aircraft operation mode known as STOBAR (Short Take-Off but Arrested Landing), the INS Vikrant is fitted with a ski-jump for launching aircraft.
Significance:
- It will bolster the country’s position in the Indian Ocean region and its quest for a blue-water Navy.
- INS Vikrant has indigenous content of 76 percent, which provides encouragement to the government’s Make in India initiative.
