About Alaskapox:
- 2015: First discovered in Alaska, USA.
- Found in small mammals, including red-backed voles and shrews, pets like dogs and cats.
- Symptoms: bumps or pustules on the skin, joint or muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes.
- Spread: through contact with infected animals, there have been no documented cases of human-to-human transmission.
- Prevention: maintaining a safe distance from animals, washing hands after outdoor activities, and refraining from keeping wild animals as pets.
Why in news?
- A US citizen died from the Alaskapox virus after being scratched by a stray cat.
