Alaskapox Virus : 14 Feb, 2024

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) has achieved a significant breakthrough in UAV technology by successfully testing a High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite (HAPS).

About Alaskapox:

  • 2015: First discovered in Alaska, USA.
  • Found in small mammals, including red-backed voles and shrews, pets like dogs and cats
  • Symptoms:  bumps or pustules on the skin,  joint or muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Spread: through contact with infected animals, there have been no documented cases of human-to-human transmission.
  • Prevention: maintaining a safe distance from animals, washing hands after outdoor activities, and refraining from keeping wild animals as pets.

Why in news?

  • A US citizen died from the Alaskapox virus after being scratched by a stray cat.
